SERIES 7 AUGUST 24 Rain dented the slim hopes of a few teams. While the Zone 'B' quarter-finalists were already confirmed, two positions were still up for grabs in Zone 'A' going into the seventh and final round. In Zone 'B', St. Catherine, champions Spartan, Police and Maple booked their places in the last eight and only waited for their order of finishing. But it was a different ball game in Zone 'A' as only winners Empire and Carlton were in the quarter-finals. The teams desperately battling for the last two berths were YMPC, Pickwick, Cable & Wireless and Banks. Empire finished as the only unbeaten team throughout the tournament with 24 points, while Carlton were on 12, YMPC ten, Pickwick and Cable & Wireless eight each, Banks six and BCL four. Net run rate could have been a crucial factor, depending on the outcomes but all the matches ended in no-decisions with play in only two Police v Spartan at Weymouth A and Schools v Maple at Lodge A. Matches in which there was no play: BCL v Banks at Blenheim A; Carlton v YMPC at Black Rock; Pickwick v Cable & Wireless at Kensington Oval; Wanderers v BDFSP at Dayrells Road. The final standings with net run rate where necessary, were: ZONE A Empire 24, Carlton 14, YMPC 12, Pickwick 10 (.215), Cable & Wireless 10 (.054), Banks 8, BCL 6. ZONE B - St. Catherine 22, Spartan 18, Police 14 (.51), Maple 14 (-0.169), Wanderers 6, Schools 6, BDFSP 6. Quarter-final matches September 7: Empire v Maple at Bank Hall; Carlton v Police at Black Rock; Spartan v YMPC at Queens Park; St. Catherine v Pickwick at Bayfield. |
