SERIES 3 – JULY 6 ZONE ‘A’ AT THE BREWERY: KURT Wilkinson showed why he is regarded as one of the young, talented cricketers in the island with the ability to develop into a genuine all-rounder as he undermined Banks with bat and ball in a Carlton win by 69 runs. Wilkinson struck 66 in a total of 180 all out off 44.1 overs and grabbed three for 15 with his medium-pace as Banks crashed to 111 in 35.5 overs. Marlon Graham, who shared the new ball with Wilkinson and again showed the value of his off-breaks, took three for 27. The Sealy brothers, Anderson and David, also had three-wicket hauls after Carlton had won the toss but consistent batting was what Banks would have been banking on ultimately. It never materalised and Winston Reid, batting at No.7, was left high and dry on 27. AT WILDEY: COURTNEY Browne and Ron Bates, both exciting batsmen when attacking, struck half-centuries to spur Cable & Wireless to victory by a faster scoring rate over BCL in a rain-shortened match. To score 202 all out in 49.4 overs was a fairly good effort by BCL, the whipping boys of local cricket for several years. But Browne, with an unbeaten 57, and opener Bates (51) scored briskly and when the rain swept across the ground, Cable & Wireless were 178 for four off 25 overs. Ryan Layne chipped in with 22. Earlier, leg-spinner Layne took four for 40 including the scalp of topscorer Jarvis Forde (38). Bryan Neblett and Richard Foster both scored 22. AT BECKLES ROAD: RYAN Nurse, yet another of the growing number of gifted young players, produced telling performances as Empire swept aside YMPC by 58 runs after rain intervened. Nurse, affectionately nicknamed “Chicken Breast”, joined Shawn Graham in jointly topscoring with 48 as Empire rattled up 260 for six in 50 overs. Nurse was unbeaten. Roland Holder made 45 and Jason Parris 35. YMPC were set a reduced target of 214 in 42 overs and fell for 156 in 37.2 overs – at least some respectability after being 61 for eight. Fast bowler Nurse, who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm, tore the heart out of the batting with five for 31 from 8.2 overs. Malcolm Powlett, batting at No.8, hit 65 before he was bowled by Nurse. Barry Lowe made 27 in a ninth wicket stand of 75 with Powlett. ZONE ‘B’ AT PARAGON: ST. CATHERINE kept their winning record intact with an eight-wicket success over BDFSP after rain led to a revision in their target. The home team, who were put in, made 185 in 46.4 overs. Opener Shane Mayers hit 53, while Dadrian Forde (28), and tail-enders Paul Alleyne (26) and Corey Edwards (24) helped to rally after the score was 127 for eight. Veteran fast bowler Dayne Maynard took four for 35. Set a revised target of 145 in 39 overs after two stoppages for rain, St. Catherine triumphed with 13 overs to spare. Shawn Sargeant led the way with 40 not out after Rico Weekes (34) and Maynard (29) added 54 for the first wicket. AT LESTER VAUGHAN: COMBINED SCHOOLS upset Police by eight wickets in yet another rain-affected match Trevor Griffith sustained his good form with 46 and Sadiq Hill got 25as Police totalled 177 in 42.4 overs after winning the toss. Andre Gill took four for 48. Chasing a revised target of 139 in 39 overs, Martin Nurse’s boys made it in 33.4 overs. Prince Parris hit an unbeaten 40, Nurse 34 retired hurt and Omar Phillips, 28 not out. AT QUEEN’S PARK: SPARTAN’S pride took a dent as the underrated Maple pulled off 22-run victory in yet another rain-interrupted match. Put in on a slow turf, Maple scored 196 for eight from 50 overs. Opener Elvis Medford’s 26 was the topscore, while Andy Payne, Khalid Springer and Jefferson Gibbons all got into the 20s. Leg-spinner Dave Marshall was again among the wickets with three for 35 off ten overs. Spartan’s target was reduced to 181 in 46 overs after a second stoppage for rain. Despite a battling 46 not out from Kevin Stoute, they succumbed for 158 in 42.5 overs. Philo Wallace contributed 42 as left-arm spinner Dave Roach snapped up three for 25. |
