Victory for Spartan alone opens six-lead at top
Four more centuries scored; Anderson Sealy takes 14 wickets
SPARTAN recorded the only victory of Round 5 – wiping out BDFSP by an innings and 73 runs at Paragon - to open a six-point lead over Carlton at the top of the standings.
It was the first time for the season the leading team had been afforded that wide a breathing space, thus putting pressure on those in close proximity to keep winning matches.
Four more batsmen hit centuries. On the first day, Carlton’s Barbados representative Kurt Wilkinson scored an unbeaten 101 against BCL, and the young, Maple all-rounder Khalid Springer 105 – his maiden ton - off Combined Schools, while on the final day, Empire’s Shawn Graham made 104 not out off YMPC and Police captain Trevor Griffith, 108 against St. Catherine.
Banks left-arm spinner Anderson Sealy continued his big wicket-taking by hauling 14 for 177 against Pickwick.
There was a hat-trick for off-spinner Ryan Austin of Carlton.
The teams gaining first innings points were Pickwick, Carlton, Maple, St. Catherine, Wanderers and Empire.
AT THE BREWERY: DESPITE Anderson Sealy’s14-wicket haul, Banks lost first innings points to Pickwick.
Sent in, Pickwick were bowled out for 220 after being 174 for three at one stage.
Captain Rondelle Yearwood hit 74 with five fours and two sixes as he laid the foundation by adding 62 for the first wicket with George Harris (36). Ryan Hinds got 27, Ryan Hurley 24 and Mike Matthews 22.
Sealy took seven for 81 off 21.2 overs.
Banks, too, flattered after the early batsmen had played solidly and from 149 for two, they collapsed to 181 for nine at the close.
Opener Donovan Lovell lashed 44, Orion Bostic made 40, Michael Maynard 38 and Barry Callender 24. Off-spinner Ryan Hurley had five of the wickets and left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds three.
Banks added 12 to their overnight score as Hinds picked up the final wicket to finish with four for 61, while Hurley took five for 68 off 19 overs.
Pickwick made 175 in the second innings, opting for caution rather than seeking full points. Matthews scored 47 not out and the Hurley brothers, Anthony and Ryan, 28 each. Sealy took seven for 96 from 22 overs.
Set 203 to win in 40 overs, Banks were in some bother at 59 for five before rallying to 118 without further loss as Maynard (22 not out) and captain Winston Reid, unbeaten on 24, defied Ryan Hurley (three for 40) and Hinds (two for 33), who between them bowled 33 overs.
AT BLENHEIM ‘A’: FOLLOWING Kurt Wilkinson’s century, wickets tumbled on the last day as BCL managed to stave off defeat.
Asked to bat first, Carlton scored 267 for five declared with Wilkinson’s 101 not out containing seven fours and a six at No.3.
It followed an opening stand of 58 between Shirley Clarke (40) and Dale Richards (23). Randy Graham scored 35 and his older brother and captain Marlon, 24.
BCL replied solidly with 77 for one at the close and seemed to be on course for the lead on reaching 163 for three. But the customary collapse followed as the last seven wickets tumbled for only 13 runs to be all out for 176, with off-spinner Ryan Austin coming into his own.
Dave Clarke scored 64 and Kamal Turney 37. Austin took eight for 47 off 26 overs including a hat-trick.
Carlton also collapsed in their second innings, falling for 60 in just 12.2 overs with three wickets each for Lynch, Niles and Drakes.
Needing 152 for victory, BCL held on at 86 for eight. Marlon Graham picked up three for 15 and Austin three for 40 for a match haul of 11 for 87.
AT PARAGON: SPIN twins Sulieman Benn and Dave Marshall bowled Spartan to an innings and 73 runs – 37 minutes before tea on the final day - to keep the Parkites at the top of the standings with 28 points.
Left-arm spinner Benn snapped up six for 22 in the second innings as BDFSP crumbled for 103 in 38.1 overs. Lamar Wiggins topscored with 39 in 76 minutes off 67 balls, hitting seven boundaries.
Earlier, BDFSP survived for 44 minutes before they were bowled out for 130 from an overnight 109 for six. Opener Corey Clarke, who resumed on 37, was last out for the topscore of 48. He batted for 147 minutes, faced 170 balls and hit four boundaries. Leg-spinner Marshall grabbed five for 28 off 14.5 overs.
Spartan amassed 306 for six declared after BDFSP gambled by putting them in on an easy-paced pitch.
Opener Corey Yearwood led the way with 82 in 154 minutes off 106 balls, hitting nine fours and a six.
Philo Wallace, on his 33rd birthday, scored 79 in two hours with ten fours and one six off 145 deliveries as he added 115 for the fifth wicket with Hattian Graham, who hit 48 not out with six boundaries in 79 minutes.
Dion Lovell contributed 45 in a second wicket partnership of 99 with Yearwood.
Spartan’s tea time declaration soon put Stephen Howell’s side under pressure. A combination of testing bowling and reckless strokeplay proved their undoing.
AT TRENTS: MIDDLE order batsman Khalid Springer was the star as Maple had to settle for first innings points over the Combined Schools, who fielded as many as ten new players due to commitments by the regulars at the West Indies under-19 tournament in Guyana.
The 21-year-old Springer, himself a former Schools player, scored 105 in a first innings total of 261 for eight declared. He added 101 for the fifth wicket with Ricky Waldron (33).
Pedro Agard (36) and Kevin Payne (29) laid the foundation by putting on 64 for the first wicket.

Following-on, the Schools just managed to hold on at 134 for nine with Nicholai Parris, a student of Queen’s College, scoring 55 at No.3. Roach picked up three for 30.
AT BAYFIELD: CAPTAIN Trevor Griffith’s century was not enough to give Police first innings honours after they went into the final day’s play in a favourable position.
From 109 for three, Police were bowled out for 231 in reply to St. Catherine’s 254. Griffith, who started the day on 44, made 108 with 13 fours and three sixes. He and Stanton Proverbs, who made 34 after resuming on 15, added 85 for the fourth wicket. Dwayne Yearwood scored 28.
Veteran fast bowler Dayne Maynard took five for 70 off 12.2 overs.
Kenroy Williams stood out on the opening day with 97 after St. Catherine were put in on a hard, bouncy pitch. The Barbados youth team captain of 2002, found the boundary just twice in his solid knock which contained 22 twos.
Dale Mason, opening the innings, scored 56 and Shawn Sargeant 37.
Left-arm spinner Jimmy Small, who like Williams had his cricket upbringing at Deighton Griffith Secondary, took five for 59 in 21 overs.
St. Catherine made 210 in the second innings as Mason again helped himself to another half-century with 63, while Williams showed his class in 52. Pacer Ryan Willoughby took four for 28 and off-spinner Proverbs, four for 64.
AT DAYRELLS ROAD: WANDERERS picked up first innings points for the first time this season against Cable & Wireless.
Cable & Wireless would have been disappointed that after reaching 164 for two on winning the toss, they collapsed to 201 all out.
Don O’Neale made 81 off 87 balls with eight fours and two sixes as he and captain Courtney Browne featured in a third wicket stand of 106. Browne raced to 60 off 39 balls with six fours and four sixes.
Ian Bradshaw took five for 46 from 12 overs as he cleaned up the tail with three wickets in one over, while fellow left-armer and Barbados player with whom he shared the new ball, Pedro Collins, had three for 55.
By the close, Wanderers were 174 for five. Captain Dwayne Nurse made 43, Bradshaw 34, Avery Greene 28 not out and Sean Armstrong 27.
Wanderers quickly lost a wicket but Greene, with 37 and Hendy Bryan (13) helped them to the lead before the innings folded at 207 with Andrew Emtage absent.
O’Neale took six for 55 off 21 overs and leg-spinner Ryan Layne, three for 64.
Cable & Wireless scored 183 in the second innings with Browne again in aggressive mood. The Barbados skipper lashed 66 off 50 deliveries with six fours and three sixes.
Bradshaw completed a satisfying match by claiming four for 64.
AT BECKLES ROAD: SHAWN Graham, one of the most prolific First division batsmen in recent years, hit 104 not out as Empire comfortably led YMPC in a match where each team batted once.
Empire replied with 280 for three after YMPC were bowled out for 276.
Graham’s knock included 12 threes as he and Jason Parris put on 141 for the second wicket. Parris was run out for 93 which contained 14 threes and a four following an opening stand of 70 with Jason Haynes (28), who was given out for obstructing the field. Alcindo Holder was unbeaten on 24.
