SPARTAN CAPTURE TITLE
As Banks are held to a draw after Sealy equals Reid’s record haul
SPARTAN were confirmed as the new champions of the BCA Legends Division 1 championship after Banks, the holders for the previous two seasons, failed to beat Wanderers.
In taking first innings lead against YMPC at Queen’s Park, Spartan moved to an unsurpassable 62 points – 14 more than second-placed Banks - with one series of matches remaining.
Banks conceded first innings at Dayrells Road and also had to endure the agony of their most experienced batsman Sherwin Campbell being injured and rushed for medical attention after he was struck in the mouth by a delivery from his former Barbados team-mate Hendy Bryan.
Two young players reached significant landmarks. Banks left-arm spinner Anderson Sealy emulated the record of his captain Winston Reid for the most wickets in a season (92) following a five-wicket first innings haul, while Combined Schools captain and opening batsman Martin Nurse became the first batsman to amass 700 runs for the season during his first innings 43 against Carlton, who took first innings honours at Lodge.
It was also the first time for the season that no wins were recorded in a series.
BDFSP middle order batsman Dadrian Forde hit a match-saving maiden century – 112 not out in the second innings against Pickwick, who took first innings at Kensington Oval – to pass 500 runs for the season.
The other teams gaining first innings points were Cable & Wireless and Maple over BCL and Police, while there was a no-decision between St. Catherine and Empire following heavy rain which wiped out the opening day’s play at Bayfield.
AT BLENHEIM ‘A’: Cable & Wireless admirably defended a first innings total of 149 by bowling BCL out for 63 on the first day during which 21 wickets fell.
Junior Holder topscored with 39 for Cable & Wireless who won the toss. Fast bowler Antonio Thomas made 32, Don O’Neale 21 and Antonio Mayers 20.
Belatedly following the pattern of a few teams, namely Banks, BCL used off-spinners Dave Clarke and Dwayne Lynch as the new ball bowlers. Clarke responded by taking six for 72 off 23 overs, while Lynch picked up two for 53. Pacer Mervyn Sandiford, the fourth bowler in operation, wrapped up the tail to end with two for 11.
The in-form Kamal Turney, with 31 and captain Randy Thomas (14) were the only double-figure contributors for BCL. Seven batsmen failed to score.
Leg-spinner Ryan Layne took four for 22 to become the fourth bowler for the season to reach 50 wickets as he moved to 52, and medium-pacer Antonio Mayers, three for three.
From an overnight two for one, Cable & Wireless declared their second innings at 124 for nine. Mayers hit an even half-century.
Lynch took four for 33 and Ryan Cumberbatch two for 15.
Set 205 to win, BCL ended on 146 for five. Turney made 39 and Jarvis Forde and Clarke 38 each.
AT LODGE, SOCIETY: AFTER low scores in his previous two matches, Combined Schools captain Martin Nurse hit back to score 43 and 62 as he moved to 786 runs from eight matches for the season.
Having been put in, the Schools were bowled out for 139. Apart from Nurse’s 43, promising wicket-keeper/batsman Cyprian Payne got 26.
Off-spinners Shirley Clarke and Ryan Austin each took three wickets for 26 and 43, while left-arm pacer Ryan Clarke had two for 21.
Carlton responded with 140 for nine declared after going into the final day on 109 for five. Opener Ron Cumberbatch made 36, Kirk Gibson 29 and Shirley Clarke 22. Nikolai Charles grabbed five for 20.
The Schools scored 156 for nine declared in their second innings, bringing the match to a close. Nurse’s 62, which included four sixes and two fours was followed by Mark Trotman’s 21 as the pair added 46 for the first wicket.
Shirley Clarke took four for 29, while Austin picked up three for 63 to carry his haul of wickets for the season to 51.
AT KENSINGTON OVAL: DADRIAN Forde, a compact middle order batsman, hit 112 not out and with his captain Carlo Morris ensured a draw for BDFSP.
With a first innings deficit of 158, BDFSP recovered from 53 for three to close on 228 for four. Forde and Morris added 145 for the fourth wicket. Forde, a member of the Barbados under-19 team for the past two seasons, was at the crease for a shade over three hours, faced 138 balls and struck nine fours and three sixes as he moved to 563 runs for the season. Morris made 54 in 148 minutes off 138 deliveries with two sixes and two fours.
Left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds took two for 42 and leg-spinner Camilus Alexander two for 83.
BDFSP were bowled out for 113 after winning the toss. Opener Lamar Wiggins got 34 and Forde 32 as Alexander, a Grenadian and former Windward Islands under-19 player, snapped up five for 22 from 15.5 overs. Off-spinner Rommel Small took three for 38 and left-armer Scofield Hewitt two for 14.
Pickwick declared at 271 for six after going into the final day on 195 for four. Captain Rondelle Yearwood made 67 at the top of the order, Mike Matthews 63 not out, Anthony Hurley 57, Ryan Hinds 27 and Kirk Edwards 20.
Pacer Marlon Blagrove took two for 36 and Antoine Roach two for 81.
AT WEYMOUTH ‘A’: STEADY batting by Maple earned them first innings points.
Having bowled Police out for 212 and entering the final day on 35 for three, Maple held on gallantly to respond with 220 after being 192 for eight.
Ricky Waldron led the way with 84, Andy Payne got 36 and Khalid Springer 35. Pacer Kenrick Marshall took three for 44 and off-spinner Stanton Proverbs, two for 88.
In the Police first innings, Proverbs made 48, Dwayne Brathwaite 45, Rudolph Clarke 29 not out, Stephen Herbert 27 and Derwin Thompson 22.
Seamers Khalid Springer and Donovan Lopez each took three for 33 and 42.
Police were 52 for four in the second innings. Herbert made 24 while pacer Andre Evelyn had three for 12.
AT QUEEN’S PARK: CHAMPAGNE flowed in the Spartan dressing room as the City team won their first title in nine seasons and 19th all told. Spartan had last shared the cup with Cable & Wireless (BET) in 1994.
Following a late start due to rain which seeped under the covers on the opening day, Spartan batted for the rest of the day to total 236 in 64.3 overs. Opener Wayne Blackman made 71 including eight fours and a six to take his aggregate for the season to 542. Hattian Graham contributed a brisk 34 low in the order, Corey Yearwood 25, Philo Wallace 23 and Dave Marshall 20.
Off-spinners William Lashley and Wendell Coppin and medium-pacer Dwayne Smith each took two wickets for 38, 44 and 64 runs.
YMPC were dismissed for 116 with Smith scoring 40 and captain Adrian Jones 24. Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn took five for 30 to move to 50 wickets in nine matches for the season, leg-spinner Marshall three for 53 and pacer Jason Bennett two for 18.
Following-on, YMPC ended on 133 for four. Jones got 39 and William Lashley and Smith 21 each. Bennett picked up two for 55.
AT BAYFIELD: RAIN badly affected the match, thus leading to a no-decision.
Not a ball was bowled on the first day as the pitch was affected after the covers were blown away, and only 17.5 overs were possible on the last day despite an early start as rain again swept across the ground.
St. Catherine who were put in, were tottering on 39 for six. Kayode Pantophlet made 20 not out.
For Empire, Adam Sanford, the Dominica-born, now Antigua and Leeward Islands fast bowler, who has played for the West Indies, took three for 14 and Ryan Nurse three for 20.
AT DAYRELLS ROAD: BANKS desperate bid for full points to keep the title race alive came to an eventful end.
They not only conceded first innings points but had the agony of seeing Sherwin Campbell leaving the field in pain after a delivery from Hendy Bryan deflected off the bat into his mouth, knocking a couple teeth out of shape in the second innings.
At that stage, Campbell was on 44 as Banks were in pursuit of a difficult target of 187 in 22 overs. In fading light, Banks closed on 95 for three off 13 overs. Barry Callender made 25 as Barbados left-arm pacer Ian Bradshaw grabbed all three wickets for 40 runs.
Wanderers made 222 all out after they were put in. Philip Aimey, with 73 and Bradshaw, who made a solid 51, added 84 for the fifth wicket. Captain Dwayne Nurse scored 42.
Aimey was at the crease for 110 minutes, faced 135 balls and struck five boundaries and three sixes.
Winston Reid took five for 59 off 35.1 overs and fellow left-arm spinner Anderson Sealy five for 113 in 38 overs to move to 92 wickets for the season – the same record number taken by Reid in 2000. It was the fifth time for the season Sealy had conceded over 100 runs in an innings.
Banks declared on 166 for eight after starting the final day on five for one. Donovan Lovell made 55 and Junior Murray 44. Off-spinner Andrew Emtage took four for 28 and medium-pacer Marvin Forde two for 41.
Wanderers declared their second innings on 130 for five with Sean Armstrong scoring 83. Adrian Springer took three for eight and Reid, two for 31.
