RAIN WASHES OUT ENTIRE LAST DAY’S PLAY
Empire, BDFSP gain first innings points

EMPIRE and BDFSP were the only teams to gain first innings points as heavy, consistent rain washed out the final day’s play in all matches.
It meant that the gap between the top two teams remained the same, thus giving Spartan a stronger smell of the title with two rounds of matches left.
There was no question that Empire were the side to suffer most from the elements. They not only took the initiative over Combined Schools at Lodge but were in such a strong position that victory was virtually a foregone conclusion had the rain not intervened.
BDFSP gained the advantage over St. Catherine at Bayfield.
Pickwick captain Rondelle Yearwood hit a commanding century – 147 against Police at Kensington Oval – to join the 500-run club.

AT BLENHEIM ‘A’: BCL impressed by scoring over 300 runs in an innings as they kept Wanderers in the field all day.
Wanderers gambled by putting the home team in and BCL duly obliged by reaching 314 for six.
Kamal Turney led the way with 81 including six fours and a six, passing 500 runs for the season in the process, while Richard Harbin recorded his third half-century in four innings in scoring 51 not out.
Captain and opener Randy Thomas, along with Dwayne Lynch, each scored 31, Rommel Corbin 27 not out, Dave Clarke 26 and Jarvis Forde 20.
Extras also contributed a healthy 44.
Experienced seamer Hendy Bryan took three for 45 and skipper Dwayne Nurse two for 50.

AT WILDEY: CABLE & WIRELESS were on course for first innings points against Maple.
Maple scored 206 all out after they were put in and the home side responded with 176 for four.
Jefferson Gibbons topscored with 55 off 58 balls for Maple and the promising all-rounder Khalid Springer got 50 from 62 deliveries. Kirk Straughn made 25, Prince Parris 22 and Ricky Waldron 21.
Leg-spinner Ryan Layne took six for 83 off 21 overs.
Ron Bates then led Cable & Wireless’ charge by hitting 77 off 79 balls including seven fours and three sixes, which lifted him to 526 runs for the season.
Bates and Don O’Neale (44) added 116 for the second wicket before both fell to off-spinner Shane Ramsey, who took two for 41. O’Neale’s knock took him to exactly 500 runs for the season. Mwanghi Broomes was unbeaten on 21.

AT BLACK ROCK: SPARTAN were strongly placed to take first innings lead over Carlton, who flattered after an enterprising start.
Asked to bat first, Carlton were given a solid opening partnership of 81 between Jason Clarke and his cousin Shirley Clarke. They reached 140 for two at one stage but then collapsed to 181 all out in 53.2 overs as leg-spinner Dave Marshall grabbed six for 56 off 24.2 overs.
Jason Clarke made 57, fellow left-hander Kirk Gibson hit 49 at No. 3 and Shirley Clarke 29. Both Clarkes were victims of Marshall.
Former top West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes, in only his second match of the season, was run out without scoring off his first ball.
Fast bowler Jason Bennett took three for 26.
Spartan closed on 127 for one. Philo Wallace, who batted at No. 3, was unbeaten on 50 in an unfinished partnership of 78 with Wayne Blackman (38 not out). Corey Yearwood got 32.

AT LODGE, SOCIETY: IMPROVING off-spinner Jamal Smith undermined his former Combined School team-mates with a first innings five-wicket haul.
Smith, who played the first two matches of the season for the schoolboys as a wicket-keeper/batsman before he was sidelined by an injury, took five for 26 off 14 overs in a paltry total of 63 in 42.4 overs after Empire won the toss on a soft pitch.
Middle order batsman Omar Phillips scored 21.
Empire raced to 174 for six declared in 33 overs with Alcindo Holder lashing 51 including five sixes. Robin Parris contributed 38 not out and Jason Parris 29 to move to 520 runs for the season. Nicholai Charles took three for 36.
Holder then returned to grab three for 18 as the Schools limped to 51 for four at the close. Martin Nurse scored 28.

AT KENSINGTON OVAL: CAPTAIN Rondelle Yearwood hit a commanding century to pass 500 runs for the season in Pickwick’s 306 for six declared in 90 overs off Police on a day when 102 overs were bowled.
After winning the toss on an easy-paced pitch, Pickwick were given a sound start by Yearwood and Anthony Hurley (22), who put on 66 for the first wicket.
They soon lost Kirk Edwards without addition and then slipped to 96 for four before Yearwood and Kerry Holder, who made 20, steadied the innings with a stand of 68.
Jason Hinds helped Yearrwood, who made 147 to lift the tempo by scoring 71 not out in a sixth wicket partnership of 120.
Yearwood batted for 283 minutes, faced 271 balls and struck nine fours and two sixes as he moved to 564 runs for the season. Left-arm spinner Sadiq Hill took two for 57 and Derwin Thompson two for 93.
Police were 48 for two with Dwayne Brathwaite 22 not out.

AT BAYFIELD: FAST bowlers Tino Best and Corey Edwards each grabbed four wickets to bowl BDFSP to rare first innings points this season.
Defending a modest total of 160, the youngsters from the Sports Programme dismissed St. Catherine for 91 in 22.4 overs.
Kayode Pantophlet, who batted at No. 8, scored 22 not out for St. Catherine. Edwards took four for 27 and Best four for 43 as he again came under the microscope in sending down a couple fast, high deliveries.
Best had also shown that he is no slouch with the bat by hitting the topscore of 44. Captain Carlo Morris made 31, Antoine Roach 27 and Dadrian Forde 24.
Derrick Bishop, the St. Catherine captain and left-arm spinner, took five for 36 and leg-spinner Pantophlet, two for 24.

AT BECKLES ROAD: BIG left-arm fast bowler Dwayne Burke snapped up five wickets and there were half-centuries for Michael Maynard and Donovan Lovell in what has been considered a grudge match in recent years between YMPC and Banks.
Banks, the recipients of several top YMPC players five years ago after there were differences with the management of the Beckles Road club, made 246 for eight declared, having lost the toss.
Maynard, batting at No. 3, scored 56 and the usually big-hitting Lovell made 55 as the pair added 115 for the second wicket. Windward Islands and former West Indies wicket-keeper Junior Murray made 43.
Burke took five for 53 and seamer Calvin Watson two for 49.
YMPC responded with 107 for five after being 50 for four. Three batsmen were run out. Lonsdale Blake made 37 and William Lashley 30 not out.
