BCA Top 40: 1997 - Commanding St. Catherine come in from the cold, rollocking double for Terry

Bridgetown, Barbados, July 7 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

Floyd Reifer hits double-century in amassing most runs, Reid again takes most wickets

After a 15-year drought, St. Catherine captured only their second top division title with one round of matches remaining by picking up speed in the second half with five straight wins in the 1997 season.

It was one of the most sensational turnarounds in the modern era of the Championship.

In fact, since the Competition was contested among 14 teams from 1989, no side had won as many as five matches in the last seven rounds.

The change of fortunes started with a default victory in the rain-hit seventh series when YMPC could not field a team to start the match at Bayfield.

St. Catherine had just come off a three-wicket defeat against Police at Bayfield despite taking first innings points and were among four teams bunched on 24 points (the others were defending champions Empire, YMPC and Carlton) with Spartan at the top on 38 and Police second on 28.

Suddenly, St. Catherine, led by attacking opening batsman Gregory Jones, the son of former Barbados wicket-keeper Erskine “Booza” King, got renewed energy.

Perhaps what made that seventh series even more telling was that with limited play, four matches ended in no results, while Carlton and BET managed first innings over Maple and Schools South at Trents and Wildey.

So St. Catherine jumped into second position on 32 points - seven adrift of Spartan.

Then Jones' men turned on the heat with four wins.

They beat Banks by 36 runs at Bayfield; Schools South by ten wickets at the Deighton Griffith ground, Kingsland; Spartan by seven wickets at Bayfield; and Wanderers by 59 runs at Bayfield.

By then St. Catherine were comfortably at the top on 64 points - 13 more than second-placed Police as the only other title contenders with Spartan having slipped to 43 points.

Although being led on first innings by Schools North at Coleridge & Parry, Ashton Hall, in a rain-hit penultimate round, the Cup was wrapped up as Police, too, were led on first innings by Pickwick at Kensington Oval.

Ultimately, St. Catherine lost at home to fellow “country” team Maple by eight wickets to finish on 65 points with YMPC, who won their last two matches against Wanderers and Pickwick finishing second on 56 points.

Significantly, veteran wicket-keeper/batsman Thelston Payne, who played the full season and batsman Victor “Percy” Brathwaite, with a solitary match against Banks, were the only members of the St. Catherine team, who were also in the 1981 side, captained by inspirational swing bowler Trevor Clarke, when they shared the title with Carlton.

In a very rare disappointing season with the bat, the 40-year-old Payne managed just 211 runs (ave: 19.18) with one half-century (78) in the first innings against Empire at Bank Hall in the third series.

He was, however, solid behind the stumps with 31 victims.

All-rounder Terry Rollock of YMPC was easily the most outstanding player of the season.

Born in Bourbon, St. Lucy, the 28-year-old Rollock became the fourth player since the turn of the 1980s to perform the double of over 500 runs and 50 wickets.

Rollock scored 502 runs (ave: 29.52) and took 50 wickets (ave: 15.16), joining the likes of two other leg-spinners - George Linton of Spartan and Empire’s Sherlon Greaves, and medium-pace all-rounder Winston Herbert of BCL in that special "double" category. To boot, Rollock took 12 catches.

Linton’s feat was in 1981 (556 runs, ave: 34.70; 51 wickets, ave: 14.72); Greaves' in 1993 (522 runs, ave: 38.53; 63 wickets, ave: 11.30) and Herbert's in 1994 (659 runs, ave: 34.68; 53 wickets, ave: 16.56).

Eight batsmen joined Rollock in amassing over 500 runs - Floyd Reifer (BET, 634; ave: 57.63); Mark Sealy (Wanderers, 606; ave: 40.40); Carlisle Best (Empire, 574; ave: 57.40); Ahmed Proverbs (Police, 554; ave: 27.70); Horace Walrond (St. Catherine, 524; ave: 32.75); Barry Callender (Banks, 521; ave: 30.64); Raymond Griffith (Pickwick, 507, ave: 33.80) and Roy Alleyne (Spartan, 503; ave: 31.43).

Reifer, the BET captain, slammed an unbeaten 265 at No. 4 in a total of 466 for seven off 72 overs against Banks, who were bowled out for 182 in 67.4 overs in their first innings in a drawn 10th round match at Wildey.

In 89 matches since 1990, Reifer carried his aggregate to 4425 including eight hundreds and 21 half-centuries, at an average of 41.74.

It was the sixth straight season Reifer made over 500 runs and his 265 not out remains the highest score at this level in the past four decades.

Inevitably, left-arm spinner Winston Reid of YMPC was the star bowler.

For the fourth successive season, and fifth all told for the decade, Reid took the most wickets (72) at an average of 11.50.

In so doing, he lifted his tally of wickets for the decade to 529 in 95 matches.

Along with Reid and Rollock, six other bowlers managed over 50 wickets - Sylvester Louis (Police, 67; ave: 9.01); Emmerson Jordan (Maple, 60; ave: 9.68); Dave Marshall (Spartan, 60; ave: 10.00); Henderson Broomes (Carlton, 58; ave: 13.20); Julian Beckles (St. Catherine, 52; ave: 12. 07); and Victor Skeete (St. Catherine, 50; ave: 13.72).

It represented dominance by pace bowlers as leg-spinner Marshall was the only other slow bowler apart from Reid and Rollock in the 50-wicket club.

Courtney Browne of BET was the top wicket-keeper with 33 victims (26 catches and seven stumpings), while St. Catherine’s Dale Mason took the most catches as a fielder (16).

Fifteen centuries were scored - the same number as the previous season. Floyd Reifer and Raymond Griffith each scored two.

St. Catherine team (with matches in brackets) - Gregory Jones (captain), Horace Walrond, Thelston Payne, Julian Beckles, Dale Mason, Victor Skeete (12), Brian Shepherd (11), Pearson Best (9), Darwin Brathwaite (8), Terry Watson (7), Ryle Stuart (5), Dale Richards, Jason Jordan, Joseph Williams, Dayne Maynard (4), Victor Brathwaite, Sam Cooper, Dale Brathwaite, George Browne (1).
