Road to The BCA Top 40: Double delight for gracious Greaves as Empire grab Cup - 1993

Bridgetown, Barbados, June 9 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

============================================

Thelston Payne piles up most runs, Peter Thompson tops with wickets

Spurred by an outstanding all-round performance from captain Sherlon Greaves in which he became only the second player in 12 seasons to perform the “double”, Empire picked up significant points in the homestretch to recapture the First division title they had last won in a share with YMPC two years earlier.

And a week later, Greaves was celebrating another “double” success, as he led Empire to the one-day (40-over) title with a 25-run victory over Wanderers in the Final at Kensington Oval in what was then known as the Barbados Fire Cup.

The 1993 season will also be long remembered for a unique feat by the burly Police fast bowling all-rounder Kenrick Marshall, who grabbed all ten wickets in an innings for the same number of runs against Schools North at St. James Secondary.

A leg-spinning all-rounder, Greaves scored 522 runs including one century and two half-centuries, at an average of 38.53, and took 63 wickets at 11.30 runs apiece including the joint most five-fors (seven) with the underrated Carlton fast bowler Peter Thompson, who was the top wicket-taker with 72.

To boot, Greaves, nicknamed "Gower" held 13 catches.

Greaves’ best figures were nine for 40 in the first innings en route to a match tally of 16 for 87 against Banks at The Brewery in the 12th round.

His performance, at the age of 31, led to a belated call-up to trials, stoutly defended by chairman of selectors Charles Griffith (now Sir Charles) in the face of criticism from some pundits.

Greaves was also recalled to the Barbados team for the 1994 Red Stripe Cup first-class Championship in which he played three matches under the captaincy of his club-mate Roland Holder in a generally very disappointing season for Barbados, as they failed to win a match and finished one from the bottom of the table.

Ironically, Greaves led Empire for eight Division 1 matches in 1993 after Holder, the appointed captain, was only available for five matches because of duties with Barbados and West Indies teams.

Co-incidentally, the player who previously achieved the feat of 500 runs and 50 wickets in a season was also a leg-spinning all-rounder, George Linton, of Spartan in 1981. Linton scored 556 runs (ave: 34.70) and took 51 wickets (ave: 14.82).

Empire captured the title with 67 points - three more than second-placed St. Catherine - but early pace-setters YMPC would have been left wondering where they fell down in finishing fourth on 59 points.

Mark Estwick’s growing reputation as a smart, aggressive captain and sharp wicket-keeper, led to YMPC winning their first four matches to be on 32 points - 12 more than second-placed St. Catherine with Empire in mid-table on 13 points.

But Empire stepped up in the next series, beating YMPC by five wickets with only 14 balls to spare at Bank Hall.

By the end of Round 6, St. Catherine had taken over the lead on 36 points, albeit by just one point over YMPC, who recaptured it after Round 8 (44 points) as St. Catherine slipped to fourth on 38 points, with Empire sixth on 32.

YMPC kept at the top before Empire jumped ahead by the end of Series 11 with 56 points - just one point more than YMPC - after crushing Schools North by eight wickets inside two days at the Coleridge & Parry School ground, Ashton Hall in St. Peter.

Thereafter, Empire never looked back. They pulled off a 67-run win over Banks with 9.3 overs remaining, as YMPC were led on first innings by BET at Wildey, and St. Catherine stepped up to second place with an exciting two-wicket win against Wanderers at Dayrells Road.

So going into the last round, there were four contenders for the title - Empire 64, St. Catherine 63, Spartan 59 and YMPC 56.

And guess what? You couldn’t have wanted a more fitting climax: Spartan v Empire at Queen’s Park and YMPC v St. Catherine at Beckles Road.

As it turned out, both matches were drawn with first innings points for Empire and YMPC.

Fittingly, Greaves had a good all-round match, topscoring with 55 in an Empire first innings total of 174 all out off 39.4 overs and grabbing six for 59 off 22 overs as Spartan were bowled out for 169 in 57.3 overs with the last wicket pair of Ezra Moseley and George Linton adding 40 before Moseley fell to medium-pacer George Codrington for 30, leaving Linton on 14 not out.

Empire scored 40 for two in the second innings.

Hence, Empire ended with 67 points including seven wins with no defeats. St. Catherine, who finished on 64 points, also had seven victories and no losses; Spartan, too, won seven times but were defeated once in gaining 60 points while YMPC, on 59 points, had six victories and two losses.

There were outstanding batting performances in terms of players reaching the coveted 500 runs in a season, as evidenced by as many as 16 pushing up their chests. That was the highest number in the period under review, beating the 13 in 1989.

Thelston Payne, the St. Catherine stalwart, still enjoying his batting and wicket-keeping at the age of 36, amassed the most runs (717) including two centuries and topped the overall averages as well with 51.21.

And to boot, the old “Carew” had 30 victims behind the stumps.

Payne’s batting rival for many years, the Police captain Leslie Reifer and burly Banks all-rounder Barry Callender, each scored 618 runs.

Next in line was the new BET captain Brian Johnson with 609, followed by another new skipper, Byron Morris of the BCL (601).

The others who scored over 500 runs were: Wilbur Bruce (Carlton; 592); Sean Armstrong (Wanderers; 591); Stanton Proverbs (Police; 574); Ricky Hoyte (Empire; 538); Gregory Jones (St. Catherine; 529); Floyd Reifer (BET; 527); Sherwin Campbell (YMPC; 527); Ron Bates (BET; 527); Rommel Brathwaite (BET; 520) and Roy Alleyne (Spartan; 501).

Peter Thompson’s 72 wickets emulated YMPC left-arm spinner Winston Reid’s mark of the previous season - at 12.33 runs each.

Apart from Thompson, Greaves and Kenrick Marshall, four other bowlers got over 50 scalps - Linton (66), Reid (58), BET fast bowler Gordon Maxwell (57) and Carlton pacer Henderson Broomes (56).

Returning to Marshall’s feat of ten for ten, he ended with match figures of 16 for 38 (still the best in the last 39 seasons) as Police triumphed by 81 runs in what was a 10th series match.

Scores were: Police 49 (13.3 overs) and 164-7 declared (26.4 overs). Schools North 47 all out (20.4 overs) and 85 all out (34.4 overs).

Spartan captain Livingstone Puckerin was the top wicket-keeper with 43 victims including an amazing 29 stumpings helped by Linton and another leg-spinner, Dave “Yamma” Marshall, along with off-break trundler Roy Alleyne, whose bowling action was sometimes put under the microscope.

Sherwin Campbell, always an excellent fielder since his school days at Ellerslie, was the leading fielder with 17 catches despite missing two matches while on an historic tour of South Africa with the Barbados team.

There were 22 centuries - up by two from the previous season.

Payne, Morris, Sean Armstrong and Terry Holder of the BCL each scored two.

Empire team (with matches in brackets) - Sherlon Greaves (captain), Michael Inniss, Ricky Hoyte, George Codrington (13), Derryck Battershield, Emmerson King, Delroy Walrond (12), Alphonso Lashley (11), Patterson Thompson (9), Robin Parris (8), Roland Holder, Samuel Skeete (5), Carlisle Best (4), Jeremy Alleyne, Horace King, John Bowen, McLester Burrowes (3), Brian Inniss (1).

NB: Holder was appointed captain but was replaced by Greaves for eight matches because of overseas tours. NB: Three players - Horace King, Bowen and Brian Inniss - are now deceased.
