Road to BCA Top 40: Maple’s sensational late move to capture first ever title - 1992

Bridgetown, Barbados, June 4 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

Unrelated Griffiths dominate batting, Reid is star bowler

In what was a closely bunched race for the title with three rounds of matches remaining, Maple, captained by all-rounder Pedro Agard for the first time in his third year with the Trents, St. James club, captured their first ever Division 1 Cup in 1992.

There was cricketing blood in Agard, a product of Coleridge & Parry School. He previously represented Combined Schools and Schools North and played for the champion 1988 Barbados Under-19 team. His father, David Agard, was also a former Maple captain and all-rounder.

After Series 10, the top three positions were occupied by the joint champions of 1981 - Carlton and St. Catherine - and YMPC, who shared the Cup with Empire in 1991.

Carlton, skippered by fast bowler Dale Ellcock were on 42 points, while St. Catherine, led by experienced batsman Pearson Best and YMPC, with wicket-keeper/batsman Mark Estwick at the helm, were both on 39 points.

Following were Maple on 37, old rivals Empire and Spartan on 34 each and Pickwick 32.

Rain impacted the 11th series.

There was a no result between Pickwick and Carlton at Kensington Oval with limited play (Carlton 90-5 declared (35 overs), Pickwick 79-7 (19.1 overs); not a ball was bowled between St. Catherine and YMPC at Bayfield; only 11 overs were possible at Trents as Maple reached 30 for one against Wanderers and Spartan gained first innings over Empire at Bank Hall (Empire 101-8 declared (37 overs) and 34-2 (13 overs), Spartan 107 all out (40.1 overs).

So going into the 12th round, the table for the title contenders showed: Carlton 43, St. Catherine 40, YMPC 40, Maple 38, Spartan 37, Empire 35 and Pickwick 33.

It remained tight as rain again had a say in a couple vital matches.

In the key clash between Carlton and YMPC at Black Rock, rain prevented play on the last two days, leading to a no result (YMPC 159 all out (51 overs), Carlton 0-0 (1 over); St. Catherine were led on first innings by BET at Bayfield; Empire took first innings against Maple at Bank Hall; Spartan were led on first innings by Banks at The Brewery and there was a no result between Wanderers and Pickwick at Dayrells Road.

Police, always seemingly never short of drama, suddenly jumped into line for the title after grabbing full points by default against a tardy Combined Schools North at Weymouth.

Led by a knock of 91 from Jerome Gittens at No. 6, Schools North made a decent 201 all out off 63 overs in their first innings after winning the toss on the opening day.

But sensationally when play was called half-an-hour late at 1:30 p.m. on the second day by umpires Stanton Parris of international fame and rookie female Verona Seale, only three of the Schools North team were present instead of the stipulated seven.

Hence entering the last round, the Cup contenders were: Carlton 44, YMPC 41, St. Catherine 41, Police 39, Maple 39, Empire 38 and Spartan 38.

The crucial matches were: Carlton v Spartan at Black Rock; Schools South v YMPC at Foundation, Church Hill; St. Catherine v Empire at Bayfield; Wanderers v Police at Dayrells Road; and BCL v Maple at Blenheim ‘A’.

And the results: Spartan won by 118 runs; YMPC were stunned by 57 runs after gaining a 33-run first innings lead; St. Catherine took first innings in a closely drawn match; Police also picked up first innings points and Maple came through on the outside to triumph by 38 runs on the very last day to grab the title with 47 points.

The next four positions were taken by Spartan with 46 points and YMPC, Carlton and St. Catherine, all on 44.

Two unrelated Griffiths, who both had their secondary school upbringing at Harrison College, dominated the batting.

Spartan’s Ronnie Griffith, hailing from the most northerly parish of St. Lucy, boasted of the most runs (734; ave: 40.77) including two hundreds and four half-centuries.

Left-hander Adrian Griffith, in his second season with Pickwick after disappointing with the bat the previous year, scored 702 runs (ave: 46.80) as he, too, hit two tons along with four fifties, to top the overall batting averages.

A former Schools South captain, Adrian Griffith went on to play for Barbados and West Indies in Tests. He now works for the ICC as Senior Manager (Umpires and Referees). His younger brother, Raymond, also represented Harrison College, Schools South and Pickwick as a middle order batsman.

Eight other batsmen - Gregory Gaskin (Maple), Floyd Reifer (BET), Roland Holder (Empire), the Carlton trio of Wilbur Bruce, Christopher King and Ricardo Harrison; Byron Morris (BCL) and Sherwin Campbell (YMPC) - passed 500 runs.

Norman Puckerin of Police joined Ronnie and Adrian Griffith in scoring two centuries. Puckerin, also an occasional wicket-keeper, made 336 runs (ave: 37.33).

YMPC left-arm spinner Winston Reid was the top wicket-taker with 72 (ave: 11.65).

A proud product of Parkinson Memorial School, like the late great Barbados and West Indies fast bowler, Malcolm Marshall, Reid bowled a marathon 408.2 overs including 110 maidens - the most overs and maidens in the modern BCA era of the First division Championship at the time.

In fact, no bowler had sent down as many as 400 overs in a season since the turn of the 1980s.

His best figures were nine for 33 in the first innings against Schools North en route to a match haul of 15 for 67 at Beckles Road in the sixth series.

Reid was joined in the 50-wicket club by three fast bowlers in St. Catherine’s Dayne Maynard (56; ave: 13.46), Peter Thompson of Carlton (52; ave: 15.19) and Emmerson Jordan of Maple (50; ave: 8.70), along with Empire leg-spinning all-rounder Sherlon Greaves (50; ave: 15.60).

Jordan topped the overall bowling averages.

Spartan skipper Livingstone Puckerin was brilliant behind the stumps with 42 victims (26 catches and 16 stumpings), while Sherwin Campbell and BET’s Ron Bates topped the fielders with 16 catches each.

There were 20 centuries - four less than the previous season.

Maple team (with matches in brackets) - Pedro Agard (captain), Gregory Gaskin, Wendell White, Dereck Skeete, Victor Patrick, Ian Williams (13), Michael Worrell (12), Byron Agard, Emmerson Jordan (11), Richard Gibson (8), Ricky Gilkes, Carl Gill (6), Leroy Maynard (5), Elvis Medford (4), Joseph Baker (2).
