Road to The BCA Top 40: YMPC, Empire share title in dramatic finish to 1991 season

Bridgetown, Barbados, June 1 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

=============================

Roland Holder, Thomas Harris the top players

YMPC and Empire shared the 1991 title with 50 points each after a dramatic rain-hit last round.

Going into the 13th and final series, four teams were in line to capture the Cup.

YMPC, with diminutive wicket-keeper/batsman Mark Estwick at the helm, were on 49 points, followed by Banks on 46, Empire 45 and Spartan 41.

The vital matches were: Banks v YMPC at The Brewery, Empire v Wanderers at Bank Hall and BET v Spartan at Wildey.

YMPC were led on first innings and with play only possible on the final day at The Brewery and Bank Hall, Spartan lost by five wickets and Empire won by 84 runs. (NB: Five points for a win and one point for a loss in matches reduced to play on the last day only).

For the second straight season, Empire captain Roland Holder powered his way to the most runs (860) including two hundreds and four half-centuries, as he also topped the batting averages with 53.75.

Another batting “god”, Leslie Reifer, the Police skipper, had the second highest aggregate of 726 (ave: 48.40), with two tons as well, and five fifties.

Four others were in the 500-run club - opener Ron Bates of BET for the second straight season (640; ave: 40.00); Spartan captain Livingstone Puckerin (618; ave: 47.53); Gregory Gaskin, the Maple opener (614; ave: 36.11) and burly Banks hard-hitting all-rounder Barry Callender (513; ave: 34.20).

Holder and Reifer apart, Puckerin, Gaskin and the Pickwick pair of Joseph Harris and Clinton St. Hill, all had the honour of scoring two centuries.

Puckerin, who sadly died of colon cancer at the age of 49 in 2018, had the distinction, too, of scoring two centuries in one match - 116 and 106 against Maple at Queen’s Park in the 11th round.

That feat had been previously achieved in the period under review by Hubert “Ellis” Brathwaite, who made 109 and 104 for St. Catherine off Combined Schools at Bayfield en route to an aggregate of 918 (ave: 65.57) including six centuries in 1983.

The top wicket-taker was off-spinner Thomas Harris of Banks. He grabbed 65 wickets at 15.20 runs apiece and also boasted of the most five-fors (six) as well as ten-wicket hauls (two).

India-born Harris (formerly Kutappa) - he was also a fine snooker player - is one of four brothers who distinguished themselves in sports on the field in that era.

Like Joseph Harris, Thomas had his secondary school education at Foundation, while the other brothers - George and Peter - both attended Combermere.

Peter excelled as a hockey player for Combermere School Old Scholars and Barbados and George represented the Barbados Under-19 cricket team in the early 1980s, setting the stage for Joseph, who later had the distinction of also turning out for Barbados at the first-class level and Canada internationally.

George, like Joseph, played for Pickwick.

Second among the wicket-takers was the YMPC left-arm spinner Winston Reid (58; ave: 12.87), followed by former Barbados and West Indies fast bowler Milton Small with 50 (ave: 15.42) for St. Catherine.

Born, bred and resident in St. Philip, it was the first full season for Small with the Bayfield-based St. Catherine after leaving Wanderers at the end of 1989. In 1990, he played only one First division match for St. Catherine.

Estwick not only savoured his success as a champion captain but he had every right to beat his chest as the top wicket-keeper with 34 victims (23 catches and 11 stumpings).

Leon Layne of Banks was the leading fielder, taking 18 catches.

There were as many as 24 centuries - the second highest number since the 1983 season (26).
