Road to The BCA Top 40: Reifer most runs again in Police hat-trick, Greene grabs most wickets - 1985

Bridgetown, Barbados, May 6 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

Purposeful Police pull off three in a row

Leslie Reifer brought more honour and glory to The Royal Barbados Police Force in 1985.

Increasingly one of the most feared batsmen in the BCA Division 1 Championship, he amassed the most runs for the second successive season (666; ave: 39.17), but it was Police’s proud pinnacle of a hat-trick of titles, which was the talk of town and country.

Reifer’s aggressive captaincy was again backed by his three burly fast bowlers in Sylvester Louis (39 wickets), Roland Robinson (37) and Kenrick Marshall (34) with the wily “old man” of off-spin bowling, Lawrence “Jammie” Maxwell (35), featuring significantly as well.

Maxwell, tall, teasing and terrific and then aged 44, took his tally of wickets in five seasons to 237 at 14.49 runs each.

Police were a joy to watch.

The top wicket-taker was Victor “Vibert” Greene, the Wanderers medium-pacer all-rounder, with 64 at a miserly average of 9.23. He was the only bowler with more than 50 wickets.

Greene, a long-standing resident of Lodge Road, Christ Church, had his roots in the Barbados Cricket League (BCL) domestic Competition for Hamilton (now named Lodge Road) and had represented the BCL Intermediate division team in just two matches towards the end of the 1981 season before joining Wanderers the following year when the Dayrells Road club - the oldest in the island - won the top league title for the 21st time.

Apart from Reifer, only two other batsmen passed 500 runs - Empire opener Michael Inniss (592; ave: 34.82) and fellow left-hander Thelston Payne of St. Catherine (531; ave: 44.25).

Payne topped the overall batting averages and was the only batsman with two centuries of 15 all told. He made 107 not out against the BCL at Bayfield in the sixth series and 100 not out off Pickwick at Kensington Oval in Round 8.

Derwin Thompson of Police was the leading wicket-keeper with 30 victims (24 catches and six stumpings), while his team-mate Trevor Greenidge, who was very sharp close to the wicket, and Rommel Brathwaite of BCL were joint top fielders with 16 catches.

Police again showed how united they were by featuring 15 players - just two more than the previous season.

Police team (matches in brackets) - Leslie Reifer (captain), Trevor Greenidge, Nigel Johnson, Derwin Thompson, Roland Robinson, Kenrick Marshall, Sylvester Louis, Lawrence Maxwell (11), Geoffrey Mapp (10), Ricardo Phillips (9), Curtis Alleyne (6), Vincent Springer (3), Carl King, Ulric Rock (2), Ferdinand Thorne (1).
