Road to The BCA Top 40: Leslie Reifer, Neville Mason masters of 1984, Police retain title

Bridgetown, Barbados, May 4 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012  - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

Big drop in centuries

There was a big drop in the number of centuries for the 1984 BCA Division 1 Championship as powerful Police retained the title.

Only nine centuries were scored - in sharp contrast to 26 the previous season. In fact, it was the lowest amount for the decade of the 1980s.

Leslie Reifer, the Police captain, had the honour of amassing the most runs (638), the top average (42.53) and the highest individual score - 134 against Banks at the Brewery in the first innings of the opening series. He also hit four half-centuries.

Only two other batsmen reached the coveted 500-run club - Empire captain Carlisle Best (576; ave: 32.00) and the Pickwick opener Clinton St. Hill (557; ave: 32.76).

It meant that Best passed 500 runs for the third straight season and St. Hill for the second. And in four seasons, Best lifted his aggregate to 2528 - the highest all told - at an average of 39.50.

Nine bowlers took over 50 wickets, led by the outstanding St. Catherine pacer Neville Mason with 77 (ave: 10.80).

Mason’s prolific wicket-taking spurred him to the most in four seasons - 218 - at 14.63 runs each.

Stephen Farmer, the Wanderers captain and star medium-pace all-rounder, hauled in 61 and topped the overall averages (8.86).

Next on the list in terms of wickets was the talented Combined Schools seamer Ron Bancroft. A student at Harrison College, Bancroft took 56 (ave: 14.93).

The others to grab 50 wickets were Police off-spinner Lawrence Maxwell (56; ave: 15.33), Carlton medium-pace all-rounder Victor Sandiford 54 (ave: 9.70), Empire leg-spinning all-rounder Sherlon Greaves 52 (ave: 12.59), Police pacer Roland Robinson 52 (ave: 15.44), BCL captain and left-arm spinner Noel Broomes (51; ave: 12.86) and another left-arm spinner, Winston Reid of YMPC, 50 (ave: 14.02).

For the second straight season, Ricky Skeete of the BCL was the leading wicket-keeper. He had 33 victims (22 catches and 11 stumpings), while the Police all-rounder Kenrick Marshall was the top fielder with 18 catches.

Police earned 59 points - nine more than second-placed Carlton, who were captained by leg-spinning all-rounder William Hutchinson.

Apart from Reifer’s dominance with the bat and the outstanding bowling of Maxwell, who grabbed the most wickets the previous season (63), the success of Police was helped by three big, strong, pace bowling blokes in Robinson, Marshall and Sylvester Louis, who shared 114 wickets between them.

In fact, Police used only two other bowlers for the season with leg-spinner Geoffrey Mapp sending down 39 overs (he picked up just four wickets at 32.25 each) and Reifer had a solitary over while taking a wicket without conceding a run.

So well groomed were Police that they used only 13 players for the season.

Police team (matches in brackets) - Leslie Reifer, Geoffrey Mapp, Trevor Greenidge, Nigel Johnson, Derwin Thompson, Kenrick Marshall, Roland Robinson, Sylvester Louis, Lawrence Maxwell (11), Vincent Springer, Kenmore Spencer, Kenneth Sandiford (6), Carl King (4).
