Road to The BCA Top 40: Hubert Brathwaite slams record six tons en route to 918 runs - 1983 season

Bridgetown, Barbados, April 30 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

=================================

Hubert “Ellis” Brathwaite was a remarkable high-scoring batsman, who slammed a record six centuries en route to over 900 runs for St. Catherine in the 1983 Championship.

Old BCA top division records are very, very hard to trace but Brathwaite’s six tons remain a record for a season in the last four decades for sure.

Only in his second season for St. Catherine after leaving his long-standing club Banks as captain and where he was still an employee, Brathwaite, then aged 33, was truly head and shoulders above the rest. He not only amassed the most runs (918) and centuries, but his average of 65.57 was also the only one above 50.

A tall right-hander, his highest score was 151 against Carlton at Bayfield in the third series.

Brathwaite’s other centuries were 120 not out v BCL at Bayfield (Series 2); 101 v Wanderers at Dayrells Road (Series 4); 126 not out v YMPC at Beckles Road (Series 5); and 109 and 104 v Combined Schools at Bayfield in the 11th and final round.

It meant that in the last three seasons, Brathwaite had rattled up 1868 runs (ave: 40.60) - twice boasting of the most runs in a season. He scored 604 (ave: 40.26) in 1981 and 346 (ave: 20.35) in 1982.

His tremendous performance led to a recall to the Barbados team for the 1984 Shell Shield first-class Championship - he had played just a single match in 1979 against Jamaica at Sabina Park - in which he turned out in all five matches, as Barbados captured the title under the captaincy of Carlisle Best, then aged 24.

Best, himself, had presented the closest challenge to Brathwaite in that 1983 Division 1 Championship, piling up 854 runs including two hundreds at an average of 47.44 for Empire, of which he was also the skipper.

Apart from Brathwaite and Best, five other batsmen passed 500 runs: BCL wicket-keeper/batsman Ricky Skeete (664; ave: 44.26); veteran YMPC all-rounder Arlington Hunte, a right-hand batsman and left-arm spin bowler (629; ave: 37.00; he also took 33 wickets (ave: 15.48); Timothy Boyce, the stylish Empire opener, who is now a BCA Board member and still carries an air of style and flair (542; ave: 36.13); Pickwick opener Clinton “Leopard” St. Hill (539; ave: 29.94) and Police all-rounder Geoffrey Mapp, a stubborn opener, who bowled leg-breaks (520; ave: 37.14).

In fact, Boyce had the honour of scoring a century (139) in the “derby” against Spartan at Queen’s Park in the very first series when Best also lashed a century (109).

It was an outstanding season for Skeete, who was the top ‘keeper with 25 victims (22 catches and three stumpings).

St. Hill, always with safe hands, led the way among the fielders with 20 catches.

Two bowlers got over 50 wickets. Lawrence Maxwell, the tall, bespectacled Police off-spinner, grabbed 63 at 11.47 runs apiece and left-arm pacer Elvis Reifer of Pickwick took 52 (ave: 12.30).

There were 26 centuries.

Police (47 points - they earned $6 000), captained by batsman Leslie Reifer, edged out Empire by just one point to capture what was to be the first of a hat-trick of titles - a feat emulated 26 years later and then surpassed with a beaver-trick (including one shared) by the gurus of the last 11 seasons, Sagicor Life UWI.

Fifteen players represented Police. (matches in brackets) - Leslie Reifer (captain), Geoffrey Mapp, Stanley Kirton, Nigel Johnson, Kenneth Sandiford, Roland Robinson, Sylvester Louis, Lawrence Maxwell (11), Trevor Greenidge (9), Kenrick Marshall (7), Anthony Depeiza (5), Clyde Husbands, Ronald Graham (4), Holburn Smith, Kenneth Edey (2).

FINAL POINTS
