Road to The BCA Top 40: 12 in 500-run club, two grab 50 wickets - 1982 season

Bridgetown, Barbados, April 26 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

Wanderers recapture title as batsmen beat ball

Ball-beating marked the 1982 BCA Division 1 Championship with 12 batsmen scoring over 500 runs including three who passed 700.

At the top was Arnold Gilkes, the Banks captain and opener who amassed 778 (ave; 48.62) and was one of four batsmen to hit two centuries in 23 all told.

Gilkes slammed 151 not out against Police at The Brewery in the third series and an unbeaten 148 off YMPC at Beckles Road in the penultimate round.

The other batsmen with two tons were the stylish YMPC opener and former Barbados Youth team captain Terry Hunte, Pickwick captain Adrian Grant and the prolific St. Catherine left-hander Thelston “Carew” Payne.

Hunte recorded the only double-century of the season, slamming 202 not out off Combined Schools at Beckles Road in the opening series. He finished with 645 runs (ave: 37.94).

Grant, solid as ever, was the second highest run-getter (757; ave: 42.05).

Payne’s aggregate was 726 (ave: 42.70), making him the only batsman from the previous season to be in the 500-run club again.

The others with over 500 runs were Carlton all-rounder Victor Sandiford (685; ave: 40.29); his team-mate Curtis Campbell, who also kept wicket (659; ave: 36.61); Empire’s Carlisle Best (657; ave: 36.50); Police opener Stanley Kirton (647; ave: 38.05); YMPC all-rounder Arlington Hunte (613; ave: 43.78), the uncle of Terry Hunte; opener Tennyson Gill of Maple (546; ave: 36.40); BCL’s Roy Alleyne (529; ave: 27.84) and Anthony Walker (Empire) (501; ave: 33.40).

Fast bowlers Odwin Gilkes of Pickwick and St. Catherine’s ever reliable Neville Mason were the joint top wicket-takers with 53.

Gilkes, a big, strong, rugged left-armer who had a reputation for performing countless push-ups with ease, sent down 212.4 overs and averaged 13.50 per wicket, while Mason bowled 248.1 overs and gained his scalps at 16.81 runs each.

The Wanderers seam attack of captain Stephen Farmer (49; ave: 14.08) and veteran Richard “Prof” Edwards (48; ave: 10.58) - the bowling ends at the ground are now named after them - were instrumental in spurring the Dayrells Road team to a recapture of the title - their 21st - with 69 points, 23 more than second-placed Banks.

But Wanderers, the oldest club in the island at now 143 years, have not won the most prestigious BCA title since then, as is the case with Carlton since 1981 when they were joint champions with St. Catherine, having dethroned Wanderers.

There was a keen battle for the most victims by a wicket-keeper, as well as the most catches by a fielder.

Henderson “Notchup” Jordan of Spartan, with the benefit of spin “twins” David Holford and Tony Howard, had 37 victims including 21 catches and 16 stumpings.

Wanderers’ Michael Worrell, who had been spotted and highly spoken of by the great West Indies captain Clive Lloyd a couple years earlier while keeping in the final of the Clive Lloyd Trophy Competition in London, England, finished just behind Jordan with 35 (33 catches/2 stumpings).

Worrell’s performance led to him making his first-class debut for Barbados against India at Kensington Oval in April, 1983. He also toured Zimbabwe with the West Indies ‘B’ team later the same year.

Hubert “Ellis” Brathwaite, representing St. Catherine for the first time after leaving Banks where he was the captain the previous season, was the top fielder with 20 catches, closely followed by John Holder of BCL (18) and Carlisle Best (17).

Fifteen players represented Wanderers (matches in brackets) - Stephen Farmer (captain), Mark Sealy, Michael Walcott, Nigel Seale, Lawrence Mapp, Michael Worrell, Richard Edwards, Milton Small (11), Victor Greene, Ricky Clarke (10), Shane Julien (9), Tony Cozier, Sam Headley, Edward Ince, Denis Osbourne (1).

FINAL POINTS

Wanderers 69, Banks 46, BCL 45, Maple 42, St. Catherine 37, YMPC 32, Police 32, Empire 31, Pickwick 28, Spartan 26, Carlton 24, Combined Schools 10.
