Drakes hits unbeaten 73 as Foundation look set to lift BCA Schools' title, Day 2, Update 7

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 3 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Dominic Drakes proved why he is regarded as one of the top schoolboy all-rounders in Barbados with a solid, unbeaten half-century which has virtually secured the 2016 BCA Schools' division three-day title for D's Mega Styles Foundation, barring a miracle from St. Leonard's on the final day.

Left-hander Drakes scored 73 not out to follow up figures of three for 14 with his left-arm pace, as Foundation reached a commanding 222 for nine off 87 overs in reply to a paltry first innings of 65 all out at the close of play on the second day of what has been a lopsided Final at Bayfield.

It will now require a Herculean effort to prevent Foundation from recapturing the title they last won three years ago by way of first innings against Lester Vaughan in the Final at Pine Basin.

The Church Hill, Christ Church school would view success as revenge after St. Leonard's clinched the 2014 Championship when the teams clashed in the Final at Friendship and the Richmond Gap, St. Michael school gained first innings in a drawn match.

Blessed with cricketing blood - he is the son of the former Barbados and West Indies fast bowling all-rounder and current West Indies Women's team coach Vasbert Drakes - the tall, wiry Dominic has occupied the crease for 185 minutes, faced 159 balls and struck four fours and one six.

Luck was on his side from very early after he went to the crease at No. 6, as he was caught at deep midwicket by Deswin Currency off a no-ball (called for height) off off-spinner Darrell Babb when only one. But the Barbados Under-19 team player of the last two seasons gradually settled down and reached his half-century in 137 minutes off 116 deliveries with three boundaries.

Starting the day on 43 for two off 23 overs, Foundation secured the lead quite comfortably before losing national Under-19 team wicket-keeper/batsman Shem Watson with the score 70 in the 34th over.

Left-hander Watson, who resumed on 20, was leg before wicket by the steady left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce for 36.

Boyce struck again four runs later, bowling captain Shaquan Carrington for four.

But Limar Pierce and Drakes then added 46 in only 8.3 overs to put Foundation back on course before Pierce, who started the day on five, was caught at point by Currency off tiny off-spinner Rivaldo Clarke for 42.

At tea, the score was 138 for five off 55 overs with Drakes on 19 and Jermain Davis, 14.

Davis fell shortly after the break, leg before wicket by Barbados Under-19 team left-arm spinner Currency for 15.

Drakes then dominated a stand of 47 with Kyle Weekes before Weekes was caught at short mid-on by Boyce off Babb for 12.

Shortly afterwards, Shakeem Blades was also caught at short mid-on by Boyce off Babb for six and when Pius Emilien was leg before wicket by Boyce for three, the score was 204 for nine in the 80th over.

But Jediah Blades stood firm with Drakes before fading light ended play five minutes before the scheduled close.

Boyce has three for 44 off 23 overs and Babb, three for 48 off off 14 overs.

The match ends December 10.
