Benn, K. Brathwaite, spur Barbados to record 19th one-day Final, NAGICO Super50, Semi 2, Update 29

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, January 21 - (www.bcacricket.org) -  Hail up Sulieman Benn and Kraigg Brathwaite.

Veteran left-arm spinner Benn grabbed four wickets and West Indies Test opener Kraigg Brathwaite hit a solid, unbeaten half-century as Barbados Pride romped to an unprecedented 19th regional one-day Final with a seven-wicket demolition of Windward Islands Volcanoes in the second Day/Night semi-final match of the NAGICO Super50 at Queen's Park Oval today.

Displaying his vast experience on a helpful pitch for spinners, Player-of-the-Match Benn took four for 27 off ten overs to trigger a collapse after Volcanoes, who won the toss, had reached 76 for one by the end of the 19th over.

At 34 years, 183 days, the oldest player in the match, Benn outfoxed the second oldest - Devon Smith (34 years, 92 days) with the first ball of the 20th over, for what turned out to be the topscore of 44 off 59 balls with five fours and one six.

It led to seven wickets tumbling for 50 runs in 16.3 overs before the Volcanoes rallied to 175 all out in 45.4 overs. Effectively, the last nine wickets fell for 99 runs in 26.3 overs.

Benn is now at the top of the Pride's bowling averages with the most wickets (14) as well as the best economy rate (3.11) going into Saturday's Final against defending champions Trinidad & Tobago.

It will be a repeat of the 2014 showdown, which Barbados won by 17 runs to record a sixth title.

Despite losing another old stager, Dwayne Smith, off the very first ball of the innings, the Pride, splendidly spurred by the ever reliable Kraigg Brathwaite, who made 80 not out off 120 balls with six boundaries, triumphed with 5.3 overs to spare.

Brathwaite and Shamarh Brooks (33 not out) featured in an unbroken partnership of 96 in 22.4 overs.

In slamming his second half-century, the 23-year-old Brathwaite carried his aggregate to 215 runs at the outstanding average of 107.50, which put him at the top in both runs and average for the Pride in only four matches.

Brathwaite is one of six players in the Pride side who missed the first three matches because of the West Indies tour to Australia for a three-Test series.

In the Pride's victory chase, Smith was leg before wicket by pacer Mervin Matthew for nought (1-0; 0.1 overs).

Shai Hope, pushing tentatively outside the off stump, was caught at the wicket by Andre Fletcher off medium-pacer Kyle Mayers for 28 (45-2; 13.3 overs).

And left-hander Jonathan Carter, driving, was caught and bowled by off-spinner Liam Sebastien, also for 28 (83-3; 21.5 overs).

Bowling: Matthew 7-1-30-1 (w5), Johnson 6-0-26-0 (w1), Mayers 4-0-17-1, Cottoy 7.3-0-45-0 (w2), Sebastien 10-0-37-1 (w1), Shilling ford 10-0-23-0.

In the Volcanoes innings, Johnson Charles, driving, was easily caught at midwicket by Brooks off off-spinner Ashley Nurse for nought (2-1; 1.2 overs).

Left-hander Smith, advancing to drive, was caught low by wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich off Benn (76-2; 19.1 overs). Smith was out of the crease when Dowrich also broke the stumps.

Tyrone Theophile, cutting, was caught over his head at slip by a jumping Nurse after the ball came off the gloves of Dowrich, off Benn for 31 (81-3; 21.3 overs).

Fletcher was given out leg before wicket by international umpire Joel Wilson of Trinidad & Tobago - the ball clearly came off the inside edge - as he went on the back foot to an arm ball from Benn, for two (87-4; 23.5 overs).

Captain and left-hander Sebastien, cutting at one which bounced, was caught on the second attempt by Dowrich off Benn for one (95-5; 25.4 overs).

Sunil Ambris, driving, was caught at short, straight midwicket by Jason Holder off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican for 31 (121-6; 34.4 overs).

Shane Shillingford, playing back, was given out leg before wicket by umpire Peter Nero - the ball came off the inside edge of the bat -  off Warrican for nought (121-7; 34.5 overs).

Left-hander Keron Cottoy, driving, was caught and bowled by Nurse for four (126-8; 35.4 overs).

Left-hander Mayers, hitting out, was caught at long-off by Nurse of pacer Carlos Brathwaite for 26 (151-9; 41.5 overs).

And Matthew was bowled by Carlos Brathwaite for 14 (175 all out; 45.4 overs).
