London, England, August 14 - (www.bcacricket.org) - ICBL Empire, the outstanding Barbados club which has produced many outstanding Barbados and West Indies cricketers, started their special tour of England with a 30-run win over West Herts in a rain-hit limited overs match today.
Led by a knock of 55 from captain Jamal Smith and 32 by former Barbados captain and West Indies all-rounder Ryan Hinds, Empire, now celebrating its 100th anniversary, made 172 all out after rain initially reduced the match from 50 to 43 overs.
Then chasing a revised target of 151 in 32 overs, West Herts were bowled out for 121.
Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican took three for 19 while medium-pacer Kevin Stoute, captain of the champion Barbados Super50 team, picked up three for 26 and left-arm spinner Hinds, two for 20.
The highlight of the tour is a match against an MCC XI at Lord's on Friday, August 15. It will be preceded by a tour of the world's most famous cricket ground.
Included in the 44-member Empire touring party are Barbados and West Indies icons, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Everton Weekes, Seymour Nurse and Charlie Griffith.
Sir Everton, Nurse and Griffith all played for Empire, whose base is at the cosy Bank Hall ground in St. Michael.
The co-ordinator of the tour is Peter Inniss, himself a former Empire First division batsman.
