PICKWICK WIN BCA
DIV. 1 CUP FOR FIRST TIME IN 47 YEARS
Empire lift Sagicor Super Cup,
Combermere take Shield
IN a significant reversal of fortunes,
ESA Field Pickwick won the Barbados
Cricket Association First division
championship for the first time in 47
years, while ICBL Empire lifted the
Sagicor General Super Cup limited overs
title.
Combermere wrote their name into the
history books by becoming the first ever
school team to capture the Sagicor
Shield. They defeated another school
side, Alexandra by 66 runs in the final
at Weymouth ‘A’.
Pickwick’s success in the 2005 Legends
Lager sponsored championship – with a
match to spare – was their first since
1958. It was achieved under the
captaincy of wicket-keeper/batsman
Rondelle Yearwood.
The long-time Kensington-Oval based club
which was forced to use the 3Ws Oval as
its home ground because of World Cup
preparations at Kensington, ended with
58 points – four more than second-placed
BNB St. Catherine.
Pickwick had won the Sagicor Super Cup
for the first time the previous season.
Now the positions switched as Empire,
the Division 1 champions in 2004,
captured the one-day cup with a 23-run
victory over St. Catherine in the final
at the 3Ws Oval.
St. Catherine captain Derick Bishop won
the Sir Garfield Sobers award for the
Most Valuable Player of the Series. He
made 282 runs, took 12 wickets and held
five catches.
Apart from taking the Division 1 cup,
Pickwick also boasted of the occupying
the top positions in the batting and
bowling averages. Kirk Edwards averaged
64.57 from an aggregate of 452 runs
including three centuries after playing
in only five matches because of a
professional contract in England.
National off-spinner Ryan Austin grabbed
77 wickets (the most) at 9.61 runs
apiece in 11 matches.
The leading run-getter was Dadrian Forde,
the Barbados Defence Force Sports
Programme (BDFSP) wicket-keeper/batsman,
who amassed 798 runs at an average of
38.
There were 13 other batsmen with over
500 runs – Carlo Morris (Carlton) 694;
