CABLE & WIRELESS secured the last quarter-final
place with a crushing 112-run win over beleaguered
Police as the other main contenders, Barbados Youth
‘B’, with a depleted team, lost to YMPC by 84 runs.
Enjoying the generosity of being sent in on a hard
pitch at Wildey, Cable & Wireless were the only team
to score over 200 in the series as they made 283 all
out in 49.4 overs.
Randy Thomas led the way with 79 in the middle after
Ron Bates (47) and Mwanghi Broomes (20) had posted
72 for the first wicket.
Police, batting with one player absent, fell for
171.
Barbados Youth ‘B’, hit by the absence of top
players who were taking part in the West Indies
under-19 championship in Guyana, always knew the
going would be tough. They, however, still managed
to dismiss YMPC for 185 in 48.4 overs at Beckles
Road as Dwayne Smith had his first failure of the
tournament, falling for six as an opener to pacer
Amal Nurse.
Experienced all-rounder William Lashley topscored
with 58 not out and Lonsdale Blake made 40.
The
schoolboys struggled all the way before being bowled
out for 101 in 40.1 overs but they could tell all
concerned that they had the satisfaction of playing
against Smith and another West Indies cap, fast
bowler Fidel Edwards just before both left for the
DHL Cup in Malaysia as well as the ICC Champions
Trophy in India.
Smith took two for 24 off ten overs while Edwards
picked up the wicket of topscorer Romwell Grosvenor
for 21 from seven overs.
Empire ended the preliminaries as the only unbeaten
team by way of an eight-wicket demolition of
Barbados Youth ‘A’ at Lodge, while the 2004
champions Pickwick managed their only win – by 45
runs over UWI at Brereton.
National basketballer Zaheeer Motara became the only
bowler to take six wickets in a match for the season
as UWI were jolted for 142 in 29.5 overs. The
heavily bearded Motara finished with six for 57 off
ten overs.
Tyson Belgrave took five for 37, also from ten overs
in Pickwick’s 187 all out.
Spartan’s declining form after winning their first
three matches continued as they went under to
Carlton by 34 runs at Black Rock despite a spirited
last wicket stand of 83 between veteran leg-spinner
Dave Marshall, who made 80 and Philip Browne (11 not
out). Off-spinner Marlon Graham picked up five for
18.
BCL
ended as the only team without a win as Wanderers
triumphed by five wickets at Blenheim ‘A’.
Maple beat Banks by five wickets at
Trents and St. Catherine had a similar result over
BDFSP who were without two players at Bayfield. |
