HOLDER
DALE Richards, the Carlton
captain and Barbados player, wrote his name in the
history books by scoring the first ever double
century in the championship.
Richards’ memorable achievement
– he slammed 202 not out - came against Banks at
Black Rock in a match which was also marked by a
hat-trick from off-spinner Roger Moore, and the
highest ever total in the tournament as Carlton won
by 156 runs.
The 30-year-old Richards and
Vonrick Nurse featured in an opening partnership of
211 in 30 overs after Carlton were put in before
Nurse was bowled by Nicholas King for 92.
Kirk Gibson soon fell without
scoring but Richards and the in-form Kurt Wilkinson
(50) put on 138 for the third wicket.
Carlton amassed 381 for three
off 48 overs – the highest total by any team in the
prestigious championship - as Richards struck 20
fours and four sixes in his 145-ball innings on a
ground which gained first-class status last season.
The previous highest individual
score in the tournament was also recorded by another
Carlton player, former Barbados captain and West
Indies opener Desmond Haynes, who made 154 against
Transport way back in 1977.
Banks tried to match the
onslaught by using veteran hard-htting batsman Barry
Callender as an opener but the innings closed on 225
for nine in the 34th over with Jason Smith unable to
bat.
Callender made 65 and Dale
Brathwaite 54. Brathwaite was one of four wickets
for Moore, who conceded 15 runs off 4.3 overs en
route to his hat-trick.
Empire, Carlton, Barbados Youth
‘A’ and Spartan all confirmed their places in the
quarter-finals from Zone ‘A’, and UWI, YMPC and St.
Catherine did likewise in Zone ‘B’ as rain wreaked
havoc in three matches.
There was no play at Blenheim
‘A’ (BCL v Spartan), Beckles Road (YMPC v BDFSP) and
Highgate (Police v Pickwick), thus guaranteeing
Pickwick and BCL, the 2004 finalists, their first
points.
Empire defeated Maple by 56
runs at Bank Hall, Wanderers beat Barbados Youth ‘A’
by 68 runs at Lodge, Cable & Wireless kept alive
their hopes of a quarter-final berth with a tense
one-wicket win over St. Catherine at Wildey and UWI
overwhelmed Barbados Youth ‘B’ by 114 runs at Briar
Hall.
Talented Empire all-rounder
Kevin Stoute joined the list of ‘five-fors’ by
taking five for 36 with his medium-pace after
scoring 33. Shawn Graham made an unbeaten 52 as
Empire totalled 181 for nine off 45 overs.
Fast bowler Anthony Turton,
with 23 not out and off-spinner Daley Hurley (four
not out) held their nerves for Cable & Wireless who
were struggling on 93 for eight in pursuit of 140
from 44 overs after rain forced a late start.
But all-rounder Anthony Morris
played a vital role by scoring 25 in a ninth wicket
stand of 46 with Turton after taking three for 17 in
St. Catherine’s 139 all out in 26.1 overs.
Don O’neal also had a good
all-round match for UWI. He scored 68 in a total of
255 for nine off 41 overs and took three for 34.
Pacer Nhamo Winn topscored with 72.
There was also a half-century
(53) for Larry Babb of Wanderers. |
