HOLDER
IN another
awesome batting display, Dwayne Smith smashed his
Isecond consecutive hundred, this time in a winning
effort by 98 runs against Cable & Wireless.
Ryan Layne
also recorded a century for Cable & Wireless on a
day when a record 612 runs were scored off 89.3
overs at the big Wildey ground.
There were
two other centuries as well from Empire opener Jason
Parris against BCL, and Police’s Dwayne Yearwood off
St. Catherine. Empire won but Police lost.
Smith, who
batted at No. 4, raced to 109 containing nine fours
and seven sixes off only 57 balls as YMPC amassed
355 for seven off 50 overs after the home team
gambled by putting them in. His century came in 51
deliveries with one six less.
With
Lonsdale Blake, Smith put on 159 in exactly 18 overs
for the third wicket before Blake fell to
off-spinner Daley Hurley for 78 which took 110 balls
and included six fours, with the score 246 in the
36th over.
Smith
followed in the next over, stumped down the leg-side
off leg-spinner Ryan Layne but vice-captain Calvin
Watson, with a measured 52 not out off the same
number of balls including a six, helped to sustain
the scoring rate, as well as veteran Wendell Coppin
(23 off 13 balls).
Openers
Yutesh Dhanpaul (35) and Adrian Jones (24) had set
the stage by scoring at five runs an over.
Three
bowlers were clobbered. Layne took two for 84 off
ten overs, captain Mwanghi Broomes conceded 78 off
nine in taking a wicket and pacer Corey Edwards
ended with one for 72 from nine.
Cable &
Wireless lost veteran Ron Bates to Tennyson Roach in
the first over without a run on the board but
managed to maintain a required more than seven runs
an over when Broomes and Layne were at the crease in
a third wicket partnership.
Yet, they
knew the going was always going to be tough and when
left-hander Broomes fell for 53 including eight
boundaries in the 16th over, the score was 127.
Layne
maintained the aggression but wickets fell at vital
stages and he, himself, was seventh out for 101 off
96 balls including four sixes and the same number of
fours, in the 37th over with the score 240. Cable &
Wireless were bowled out for 257 with as many as
10.3 overs to spare.
The
heavy-set Parris and Jamal Smith laid the foundation
for an Empire total of 304 for six off 50 overs by
putting on 109 for the first wicket after they were
put in at Bank Hall.
Parris made
110 and the tall Smith, who also bowls off-spin and
keeps wicket, contributed 52.
BCL also
had a fairly solid start as Kevin Marshall (66) and
Corey Bailey (40) added 80 for the first wicket but
thereafter, apart from 47 by captain Kamal Turney,
the batting fell away and Empire won by 38 runs in
the final over.
At
Bayfield, the 25-year-old Yearwood scored 103 in a
Police total of 245 all out in 49.4 overs. He batted
at No. 3 and struck 12 fours and a six in his
112-ball innings.
With all of
their first six batsmen passing 20, including the
topscore of 47 from opener Dayne Maynard, St.
Catherine triumphed by five wickets with 4.1 overs
left.
Both school
teams were among the winners. Barbados Youth ‘A’
beat Spartan by 120 runs at Cane Garden and the ‘B’
defeated Pickwick by 19 runs at Waterford.
Youth ‘A’
recovered from 68 for five in the 25th over to total
210 for nine. Barbados and West Indies Under-19 fast
bowler Kemar Roach showed he is no slouch with the
bat by scoring 55 including five sixes and two fours
at No. 8.
Roach, a
student of Alexandra, also accounted for the key
wickets of Wayne Blackman and Rohan Nurse as Spartan
were fired out for 90 in 25.4 overs. It was the
first time a side fell for under 100 for the season.
Shamar
Cooke of the Garrison hit 75 including four sixes to
lead the way for Barbados Youth ‘B’ who made 252 for
nine.
Desperate
for their first win, Pickwick were on course after
Kirk Edwards and Ryan Arthur put on 99 for the
second wicket. But the last six wickets fell for 30
runs with off-spinner Jed Yearwood, better known for
his batting, taking four for 30.
Edwards
scored 92 off the same number of balls with ten
fours and three sixes while Arthur made 62.
Wanderers
beat Banks by four wickets to record their first
victory, Carlton had a similar margin of victory
over Maple and UWI brushed aside BDFSP by 130 runs.
UWI captain
Shirley Clarke had an outstanding match at Brereton.
He scored 89 not out in a total of 290 for seven and
took three for 38.
