  Round 4 – July 2

HURRICANE HUNDRED FOR DWAYNE SMITH
Banks captain Maynard also records a century

Review by: KEITH HOLDER

HAVING shown signs of exploding from his previous two innings, YMPC captain Dwayne Smith lived up to expectations by blasting one of the fastest ever centuries in the history of the 32-year championship, but it was in vain against St. Catherine.

Banks captain Michael “Flash” Maynard also hit a hundred off BCL.  Unlike Smith, however, his effort set up an easy 75-run win, while Randy Thomas of Cable & Wireless missed three out by two runs against Pickwick who were again on the losing end.

YMPC lost by 93 runs at their cosy Beckles Road ground after another attacking batsman, Ahmed Proverbs, had set the stage for big-hitting with co-incidentally, 93.

Smith went to the crease at No. 4 and clobbered 14 fours and 12 threes as he raced to his hundred off only 48 balls before he was bowled by left-arm spinner Glyne Strickland for exactly 100. His fifty came off just 18 deliveries and included eight threes and six fours.

Proverbs, a former Barbados player, had put St. Catherine on course for what turned out to be an imposing 294 for seven off 50 overs after they had the luck of the toss.

Batting at No. 3, Proverbs smashed 11 fours and five threes in his 89-ball knock after taking 30 balls to reach his half-century.

Smith and his West Indies team-mate, fast bowler Fidel Edwards were both expensive. Medium-pacer Smith had one for 67 off ten overs while Edwards was wicketless in conceding 46 runs off six overs.

Opener Maynard lived up to his nickname with a knock of 104 in a total of 290 for eight off 50 overs at The Brewery. He reached his century off 120 balls with six sixes and seven fours and added 131 for the second wicket with former Empire player Keegan Alleyne (51). Dale Brathwaite was again in the runs, scoring 71.

Newcomer Dean Fergusson made 59 and Ricardo Yearwood 56 for BCL who fell for 215 in 41.5 overs.

At Wildey, Thomas, a BCL captain as recently as last season, fell for 98. The opener hit 11 fours and two sixes in his 122-ball innings, dominating a second wicket stand of 111 with Junior Holder (28) in pursuit of 178.

Pickwick’s 177 for nine off 50 overs represented a significant fightback after they were tottering on 25 for six before the youthful newcomer Mark Edghill (44) and oldstager George Harris (59) added exactly 100 for the seventh wicket.

Carlo Morris of Carlton also missed an opportunity to record a century. He made 94 in a total of 281 for seven off Wanderers who lost by 141 runs at Dayrells Road.

Empire remained the only unbeaten team by way of a 43-run win over arch-rivals Spartan at Bank Hall.

The reliable Shawn Graham scored 87 in Empire’s 201 all out in the very last ball of the innings.

Barbados Youth ‘A’ kept on course for a place in the quarter-finals with a two-wicket victory over Maple at Trents, their ‘B’ counterparts also won – by five wickets over BDFSP at Waterford, and UWI defeated Police by two wickets at Weymouth.

For UWI, Raymond Singh, a left-arm spinner from Guyana, took five for 16. Singh thus became the fourth bowler of his type to pick up a five-wicket haul this season.
