BRATHWAITE HITS FIRST CENTURY OF SEASON
Five-wicket hauls for Hill, Strickland

Review by: KEITH HOLDER

DALE Brathwaite of Banks slammed the first century of the season but in a losing cause by five wickets against Barbados Youth ‘A’ for whom his brother Jonathan Carter starred with both ball and bat.

And there was personal agony for new Police all-rounder Antonio Mayers, who missed a hundred by four runs against BDFSP.

Two bowlers had the pleasure of taking five wickets. Both were left-arm spinners – 52-year-old Glyne Strickland of St. Catherine in his first season and the much more youthful Sadiq Hill of Police.

Batting at No. 5, Brathwaite hit 123 but he and his team-mates would have been disappointed with a total of 228 all out in 39 overs at Lester Vaughan.

Carter, a left-handed batsman who has developed into an effective right-arm medium-pacer, took four for 23 off seven overs including the wicket of the wicket of Brathwaite. You may want to call it ‘brotherly love’.

With Barbados Youth ‘A’ in some bother on 75 for four, Carter again proved to be a thorn as he and Ashley Nurse added 113 for the fifth wicket. Nurse fell for 38 but Carter went on to hit an unbeaten 88 off 83 balls as victory was achieved with 7.2 overs remaining.

Mayers, who previously played for Cable & Wireless, made 96 off 89 balls at No. 5 as Police amassed the highest total of the series – 256 all out off 48.3 overs at Paragon.

BDFSP appeared to be making a fight when they reached 91 for two but they ran into trouble against Hill and the last eight wickets crashed for 76 runs as Police won easily by 89 runs. Hill took five for 41 off nine overs.

Strickland’s five-wicket haul helped St. Catherine to a 52-run victory over Barbados Youth ‘B’ at Bayfield. He took five for 35 off 8.4 overs to atone for three dropped catches.

Dayne Maynard recorded another half-century, topscoring with 51 in a St. Catherine total of 237 all out off 49.5 overs.

There was some early fight from Barbados Youth ‘B’ but they faltered after reaching 94 for two. Opener Jed Yearwood made 62.

Playing like true champions, Empire pulled off a hard-fought eight-run win over Wanderers at Bank Hall. Their triumph was due mainly to tight bowling by left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds in the dying stages.

Chasing 197 for victory in 50 overs, Wanderers needed 13 off the last two overs. Hinds, who took four for 32, duly bowled a maiden in the 49th over and Wanderers were ultimately limited to 188 for nine. Marvin Forde made 59.

The experienced Shawn Graham topscored with 46 in Empire’s 196 all out in 46.1 overs after Wanderers won the toss. He and Kevin Stoute (46) put on 80 for the fifth wicket.

West Indies left-arm pacer Pedro Collins took three for 17 off 7.1 overs, including the wicket of Graham.

West Indies player Dwayne Smith enjoyed a good all-round match in a 48-run win for YMPC over Pickwick at Beckles Road.

Captain Smith hit 65 in a total of 206 all out in 42 overs and then picked up two for 21 from nine overs.

Another captain who led by example was Shirley Clarke of UWI. The former Carlton player scored 65 not out at No. 5 to carry his team to a two-wicket win against Cable & Wireless as they chased 171 at Wildey.

Don O’neal showed his former Cable & Wireless team-mates that he remains a handy all-round player by taking four for 18 and scoring 23.

There was also a keen tussle at Queen’s Park as Spartan beat Maple by 15 runs. Rohan Nurse hit 77 and Wayne Blackman got another half-century (57) in Spartan’s 216 all out in 49.3 overs.

Carlton, led by left-hander Kirk Gibson’s unbeaten 61, brushed aside BCL by seven wickets at Blenheim ‘A’.
