AT BLACK ROCK: PACER Jason Bennett grabbed a
sensational hat-trick en route to a five-wicket haul
in his first match for UWI to condemn Carlton to a
six-run defeat and their fourth consecutive exit at
the quarter-finals.
Bennett, just back from a professional contract in
Britain, prised out Corey Clarke, Marlon Graham and
Nicholai Charles as Carlton crumbled from the
comfort of 181 for four to 181 for seven in pursuit
of a target of 207.
Clarke was bowled off the second delivery, Graham
gave a catch to the ‘keeper and Charles was leg
before wicket.
Yet Carlton would have still fancied their chances
of winning with Carlo Morris at the crease. But
after Roger Moore was eighth out with the score 184,
Morris, in backing away against occasional bowler
Rommel Currency, was bowled for 19, leaving Damien
Hinds and Ryan Clarke to fight it out.
The pair managed to take the match into the very
final over before Currency, a Windward Islands
batsman, who comes from St. Vincent, bowled Clarke
with three balls left.
Left-hander Kirk Gibson topscored with 66 as he
added 71 for the second wicket with Vonrick Nurse
(46) after captain Dale Richards was out for 27 with
the score 44.
Bennett took five for 51 off ten overs and was duly
named man-of-the-match.
UWI would have bargained for a bigger total after
passing 100 with only two wickets down. The stage
was set by long-standing Barbados batsman Floyd
Reifer, who made 64 and fellow left-hander Dion
Lovell (55) with a second wicket stand of 92.
They, however, were helped by an unbroken last
wicket partnership of 27 between Nhamo Winn (21 not
out) and Bennett (10 not out) after losing six
wickets for 32 runs.
