ICBL Empire retained the Sagicor General Super Cup
by way of a hard-fought three-wicket win over
arch-rivals Super Centre Spartan on October 22.
In
the 2006 final at the Carlton ground, Black Rock,
where fortunes fluctuated, the Jason Haynes-led
Empire captured their fourth title to pocket $10
000. Spartan earned $7 000.
Spartan were bowled out for 174 in 46.1 overs after
they were put in on an easy-paced pitch. The last
seven wickets tumbled for just 46 runs in 15.2 overs.
Opener Corey Yearwood topscored with 53 off 93 balls
including four boundaries. Veteran Livy Puckerin,
appearing in his sixth final, made 37 off 36
deliveries and Rohan Nurse 20.
All-rounder Robin Parris, who was also playing in
his sixth final, took three for 24 from his allotted
ten overs of left-arm spin, while pacer Andre Evelyn
picked up two for 44.
Like Spartan, Empire were also cruising and passed
100 with only two wickets down, but they collapsed
as well, losing four wickets for 19 runs and were
struggling on 127 for six before the experienced
pair of Shawn Graham (26 not out) and all-rounder
Robin Parris (15) added 37 to pull them around.
Captain
and opener Jason Haynes topscored with 38 and
all-rounder Kevin Stoute made 37.
Sulieman Benn, the Spartan captain and left-arm
spinner, took three for 18 off ten overs.
Robin
Parris was named man-of-the-match.
It
was the eighth final for Empire and the 10th for
record eight-time champions Spartan in the 32-year
history of the islands top one-day tournament.
There was more glory for Empire when Stoute was
voted The Most Valuable Player of the Championship,
which earned him the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy and
$1 000, sponsored by Sagicor General.
Other individual $500 award winners for the
