Bridgetown, Barbados, July 12 – (www.bcacricket.org) – Despite a 15th BCA Division 1 century for Floyd Reifer and Ryan Austin’s 17th haul of ten wickets in a match, title holders Sagicor Life University of West Indies (UWI) were beaten on the field for the first time in 32 matches on the third and final day of Series 3 in the 2010 LIME-sponsored championship. UWI lost by five wickets to TeleBarbados Carlton at 3Ws Oval on Sunday, July 11, after they had taken first innings points. The last time they were defeated was against ESA Field Pickwick, also on home turf, in the fifth round of the 2007 season. Last season, UWI were listed as having ‘lost’ one match by way of forfeiture against Wanderers. That sixth round encounter at 3Ws Oval ended in a draw but Wanderers lodged a complaint, centred on the use of an incorrect ball by UWI, as well as the inclusion in their team of a player who was ineligible. In the just concluded round, UWI scored 278 in their first innings of which Reifer, a former West Indies captain, who turns 38 on July 23, scored 111 with five sixes and 12 fours. It was his first match of the season and the 160th of his Division 1 career, which started in 1987 for Combined Schools as a student of Lodge. Carlton were bowled out for 219 with 28-year-old off-spinner Austin, another player who has represented West Indies in Tests, grabbing seven for 66. But UWI faltered for 114 in their second innings – Reifer fell for just one - and Carlton, set 174 to win, were piloted by an unbeaten 84 from opener Vonrick Nurse. Austin picked up three for 41 for a match haul of ten for 107 as he passed 650 wickets in his 135th Division 1 championship after making his debut for Combined Schools South in 1997 while a pupil of Foundation. He now has 658 wickets including 54 five-wicket hauls. Reifer has amassed 7 678 runs in the Division 1 championship. Apart from his 15 hundreds, he has 36 half-centuries.
There were maiden Division 1 centuries for Reydon Toppin of championship leaders Super Centre Spartan and ICBL Empire’s Antonio Greenidge.
Toppin scored 106 in 279 minutes off 200 balls with nine boundaries as Spartan took first innings over Wanderers at Dayrells Road.
Spartan made 254 for six in response to 250 all out by the close of the second day’s play but wet conditions prevented a ball from being bowled on the final day.
Left-hander Greenidge carried his overnight score from 58 to 103 not out as Empire piled on the pressure against a weakened Guardian General Barbados Youth side and eventually triumphed by an innings and 61 runs at Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden.
Empire amassed 388 for five declared after resuming on 296 for four in response to 240 all out. Greenidge was at the crease for 199 minutes, faced 147 balls and struck eight fours.
Barbados Youth, minus the nucleus of their regular team now in St. Lucia for the WICB TCL Under-19 three-day and one-day championships, were bundled out for 87 in the second innings.
Wins were also recorded by second-placed BNB St. Catherine and LIME, who are third, over Police and Banks.
