June 24 (www.bcacricket.org) - In what is becoming a habit of writing his name in the record books, prolific opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite is now the first schoolboy in almost two decades to score two centuries in successive BCA Division 1 matches.

In fact, he has taken it a wee bit further by hitting back-to-back hundreds.

The 16-year-old Brathwaite made an unbeaten 113 for Guardian General Barbados Youth as they batted all day to reach 239 for three off 77 overs against Super Centre Spartan on the opening day of the fourth round of matches in the 2009 Caribbean Alliance Insurance sponsored championship at Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden, on Saturday, June 20.

It followed his 154 (run out) off ICBL Empire at Bank Hall in the third series when Barbados Youth made 399 all out in their only innings and had the honour of forcing the most successful First division side in the last two decades to follow-on before the match petered out into a draw.

Research by this website shows that the last schoolboy to record two hundreds in consecutive Division 1 matches was Adrian Griffith in 1990.

Representing Combined Schools South of which he was the captain, left-hander Griffith hit 102 in the first innings against Banks at The Brewery (eighth series) and 111 not out in the second innings off St. Catherine at his alma mater Harrison College ‘A’ ground, Crumpton Street (ninth series).

Both of Griffith’s centuries were made in his customary position as opener.

Griffith also represented the Barbados Youth team as well as Barbados at the first-class level before playing 14 Tests and nine One-Day Internationals for West Indies.

Brathwaite’s Combermere and national youth team-mate Roston Chase came very agonisingly close to achieving the feat of two centuries in successive matches last season when he scored 109 against Police at Weymouth and fell for 99 in his next innings against Banks at Deighton Griffith, Kingsland.

Last month Brathwaite was also in the history-making spotlight by becoming the youngest ever player to score a century in the Sagicor General Super Cup (50-over-a-side) championship, which is now in its 35th year.

He was 16 years, 160 days when he hit 101 not out for Barbados Youth against Inspire Sports Wanderers at Cane Garden, in the first round of matches on May 10.

The previous record for the youngest player to score a century in the tournament was held by Jonathan Carter, who was 16 years, 259 days when he slammed 133 not out for Combined Schools against BNB St. Catherine at Lodge ‘A’, Society in 2004 (Round 6).

There was more history to be made by Brathwaite. In recording his maiden Division 1 century against Empire to add to that in the Super Cup, he became the first schoolboy to score a hundred in the BCA’s top two championships in the same season.

In April, Brathwaite made his first-class debut for Barbados at the age of 16 years, 123 days against Combined Campuses & Colleges at the 3Ws Oval, Cave Hill. He thus became one of the youngest ever players to represent the island and the youngest Barbadian to debut since sponsored championships started in 1966. He has played two first-class matches.

And for those who have been tracking Brathwaite’s wagon wheel of centuries at all levels of cricket including trial matches, the number is now 38.
