Elite Division - Bridgetown, Barbados, May 17 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

Real relief for Empire, big performances for batsmen and bowlers

1989 was a very significant year for Empire after the number of teams increased by two to 14 with the promotion of Barbados External Telecommunications (BET), formerly known as Cable & Wireless, and the Combined Schools were split into North and South.

After a 17-year title drought, the “Blues” of Bank Hall lifted the title by a mere point over St. Catherine in what was the fourth straight, exciting climax to the season.

Under a new captain in batting all-rounder Jeremy Alleyne, who replaced ace batsman Carlisle Best, who was limited to only three matches because of international and professional duties, Empire finished on 56 points, followed by St. Catherine 55, Spartan 54, Police 53 and YMPC 47.

Empire had last celebrated silverware in 1971, having also won the previous season. It remains the longest period they have gone without capturing the Cup after their first in 1932/33. (For the records, they have 21 titles including three shared. The last success was in 2014 - the 100th anniversary of the club).

Going into the final round, five teams were in line for glory. Police, the most successful team of the 1980s with four titles, and St. Catherine were jointly at the top on 52 points, with Empire 48, Spartan 46 and title holders YMPC 44.

The matches, which mattered were: Police v BCL at Weymouth; Wanderers v St. Catherine at Dayrells Road; Banks v Empire at The Brewery; Spartan v Schools South at Queen’s Park and BET v YMPC at Wildey.

Rain affected a couple of the matches - namely at Weymouth and Dayrells Road where there were draws. Police were led on first innings, St. Catherine gained first innings, Spartan triumphed by an innings and 74 runs inside two days, YMPC lost by 118 runs after taking first innings and Empire were victorious by seven wickets.

Boasting of the most runs was Carlton’s Michael Matthews. He made 789 (ave: 39.45).

Matthews is the father of Barbados and West Indies Women all-rounder, Hayley Matthews. His son, Rey Matthews, is a current Wanderers top division player.

For the fourth time in six seasons, Leslie Reifer of Police scored over 600 runs (660: ave: 34.73). The others were in 1984 (638; ave: 42.53), 1985 (666: ave: 39.17) and 1987 (683; ave: 62.09).

And Reifer was also the only batsman to hit two centuries in 16 all told.

The feared Police side had a new captain for the third consecutive season as the tall, fast bowling all-rounder Kenrick Marshall replaced spinning all-rounder Dave “Chief” Cumberbatch, who played the full season.

Reifer had led them to a hat-trick of titles from 1983 and was also at the helm when they controversially regained the Cup in 1987 following a historic Court battle.

The leading wicket-taker was swing bowler Llewellyn “Lou” Tull of BET with 68 at 12.14 runs each in his first season at this level.

Tull was also very good in the outfield, a naturally fit athlete, who enjoyed training at the popular Enterprise beach, commonly known as “Miami” in Christ Church. And with safe hands, he took 16 catches as he prowled in the deep.

Livingstone Puckerin of Spartan was the top wicket-keeper with 33 victims (21 catches and 12 stumpings), while St. Catherine’s Ryle Stuart led the fielders with 23 catches.

It was a satisfying season for Stuart, an opener, who was one of 13 batsmen with over 500 runs (501; ave: 25.05).

The no-nonsense Stuart is now president of the demoted St. Catherine Club, and a well-known international cricket television photographer.

BET, captained by the solid, diminutive batsman Livingstone Coppin, finished 10th on 33 points.

Coppin, who later managed Barbados Youth and first-class teams, was among the stalwarts at Cable & Wireless (later also known as BET, C&W BET, LIME and now Gladiola), who had previously played “in the bottom” at Boarded Hall. In that era, they boasted among their ranks, fast bowling icons Sir Wesley Hall and Joel Garner as they dominated the Intermediate division for many years.

Both Schools North and South struggled and lost six matches each while drawing the others. Schools North finished second last on 13 points and the South, rock-bottom on ten.

Schools North were led by the attacking opening batsman Brian Johnson of The Lodge, while Schools South had two captains - middle order batsman Roger Coward of Ellerslie (nine matches) and seam bowling all-rounder Tennyson A.D. Roach of Princess Margaret (for the last four matches).

Roach, who also represented St. Catherine and Pickwick, is not to be confused with the Empire seamer Tennyson A.R. Roach, who also turned out for BDFSP and YMPC.

The decade of the 1980s will also be remembered for players benefitting tremendously with awards for outstanding performances on each playing day, compliments of Banks Breweries.

Dubbed, Banks Player of the Day, it was started in 1979 as a joint effort by Banks and the NATION and Sunday Sun newspapers.

Neville Mason, the outstanding St. Catherine fast bowler, could have opened a bar apart from his profession as a school teacher, as he captured many awards including the Player of the Year, which carried a $1000 cash prize, three times.

Players from clannish St. Catherine cashed in on that award six times in 11 seasons.

The list of Banks Player of the Year winners:

1979 - Geoffrey Greenidge (Pickwick).

1980 - Delbert Griffith (St. Catherine).
