Elite Division - Bridgetown, Barbados, November 24 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Spartan captured the 2019 BCA Elite division Championship today after beating Wildey by 204 runs at Queen’s Park on the third and final day of the ninth and last series of matches.

Set 255 to win and resuming on 44 for eight off 20.1 overs, Wildey were bowled out for 50 in 27.3 overs after play started promptly at noon despite early morning rain.

The victory came after 22 minutes play.

It was the 22nd top division title for Spartan - five of which have been shared - since the Championship started in 1892-93 and was known as First division (rebranded as Elite in 2012) and their first since 2010 when it was shared with Sagicor Life UWI.

Spartan’s titles now read: 1899-1900, 1910-11, 1913-14, 1926-27, 1928-29, 1931-32, 1937-38, 1938-39, 1943-44, 1952 (shared with Carlton), 1953, 1955-56, 1963 (shared with Empire), 1967, 1968, 1972, 1979 (shared with Banks), 1990, 1994 (shared with BET), 2003, 2010 (shared with UWI) and 2019.

Today, Wildey first lost Gregory Alleyne without addition to his overnight score of ten, caught at mid-off by Stefon King off left-arm spinner Andre Marshall to leave the score 46 for nine after 24 overs.

Marshall also accounted for left-hander Pius Emilien, who in essaying a drive, was well caught low at extra-cover by substitute Davien Branker for four.

The knock was a big relief for Emilien, better known for his left-arm spin bowling, which earned him 33 wickets for the season, as he had failed to score in his six other innings - four of which were not outs.

Marshall took five for 16 off 10.3 overs and leg-spinner Joshua Drakes, four for 20 off ten overs.

Spartan ended with 119 points - eight more than second-placed Empire, their long-standing arch-rivals, who crushed demoted Crane Resort St. Catherine by an innings and 93 runs inside two days at Bank Hall.

Going into the last round, there were three title contenders - Spartan on 107 points, and Empire and Wildey with 92 each.

There was one other outright result, as Barbados Youth beat Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) by 31 runs at Paragon on Saturday, which was the rescheduled third day of that match since BDFSP players were involved with rehearsals today for Independence Day Celebrations.

The other two matches - Wanderers v Gladiola at Dayrells Road and Carlton v UWI at Desmond Haynes Oval - ended in no results as wet conditions prevented play today.
