Elite Division - Bridgetown, Barbados, September 12 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Enterprising Empire all-rounder Kevin Stoute is closing in on 6 000 runs in the BCA top division Championship following his 10th century on the opening day of Series 4, which climaxes this weekend.
In only his second Elite division match of the season - he missed the first two matches because of a visit to the United States of America - the 33-year-old Barbados Pride player hit an unbeaten 103 against Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) to help spur Empire, the joint pre-series leaders with a resurgent Wildey on 47 points, to the day’s highest total of 276 for eight declared off 56 overs after they were sent in at Bank Hall on Saturday, September 7.
Stoute batted for 221 minutes, faced 138 balls and struck 11 threes for four fours. He added 119 in 20.3 overs for the third wicket with opener Kadeem Alleyne.
Alleyne made 95 in two hours off 75 deliveries as he counted 17 threes and six fours - just missing out on becoming the first batsman for the season to record two centuries. He hit 104 - his maiden ton - in the first innings against Barbados Youth at the Lester Vaughan School ground, Cane Garden, in the second round.
BDFSP, who went into the match languishing fourth from the bottom of the table on 16 points in the ten-team Competition, will resume on Saturday in dire straits on 38 for five off 13 overs.
Now a veteran of 132 matches at this level since his debut for Spartan as a 16-year-old Ellerslie schoolboy in the then Division 1 (rebranded Elite division in 2012) Championship 17 years ago, Stoute had a couple reasons to celebrate last Saturday.
Apart from his century, he lifted his aggregate to 5801 runs from 184 innings including 30 not outs, at an average of 37.67. He has 33 half-centuries.
Significantly, all of Stoute’s centuries are for Empire - seven at Bank Hall - after he spent three seasons with long-standing arch-rivals Spartan. Seven of them are unbeaten. His first hundred was also against BDFSP at Bank Hall in 2007.
He has reached 150 on three occasions with a highest of 151 not out against ESA Field Pickwick at Foursquare Oval in 2014.
Stoute has two tons each against BDFSP, Pickwick and Maple with the others off Carlton, YMPC, Wanderers and Barbados Youth.
As a medium-pacer, Stoute has 144 wickets at 19.10 runs each including five five-wicket hauls, with a best of five for 19 in the first innings against Barbados Youth ‘A’ at the Lodge School ground, Society, in 2006.
Since his first-class debut in 2007, Stoute has played 71 matches, scoring 2707 runs including three hundreds and 14 half-centuries, at an average of 27.07. He has 142 wickets (ave: 21.71) with three five-fors.
