Title: UWI retain BCA Elite division title on penultimate day of season

Elite Division - Bridgetown, Barbados, December 16 - ( - Sagicor Life UWI retained the BCA Elite division Championship on the penultimate day of the season today after gaining the couple batting points they needed against their closest pre-series challengers, BDFSP.

Going into the ninth round match at Paragon on 121 points - 18 ahead of BDFSP - UWI, spurred by an outstanding all-round performance from Nicholas Kirton, also put themselves in a strong position to force an outright win next Saturday.

Kirton completed a maiden century in a first innings total of 326 all out in 83 overs after starting the second day on 60 and then picked up four wickets for 57 runs with his off-spin as the home team limped to 133 for eight off 41 overs at the close.

Left-hander Kirton scored 127 of 203 balls with nine fours and four sixes.

Off-spinner Jameel Stuart took three for 56 and left-arm spinner Damario Goodman, three for 87.

Goodman, who was the first bowler to take 50 wickets for the season on the opening day, now has 52.

UWI have so far gained six points - three each for batting and bowling.

It is UWI’s seventh top division title in 13 years of competition.

Apart from Kirton, two other batsmen - 15-year-old debutant Kevin Wickham of Barbados Youth and Wildey’s Carlos Maynard - scored centuries today.

And there was a special achievement as well for Roshon Primus, the CounterPoint Wanderers all-rounder, who became the first batsman to reach 500 runs for the season en route to an unbeaten half-century against Home Improvement & Hardware Supplies Maple in a battle which will determine the team to be relegated.

Opener Wickham slammed an unbeaten 107 in 132 minutes off 108 balls with 25 threes and two fours in a first innings total of 320 for eight declared off 77.3 overs against ICBL Empire who reached 88 for two off 20 overs at stumps at Bank Hall.

Maynard made 109 in 183 minutes off 163 balls including eight fours and one six as Wildey scored 234 for six off 66 overs after dismissing Crane Resort St. Catherine for 188 in 66.5 overs at Bayfield.

Primus lashed 58 not out off 38 balls with seven fours and two sixes to carry his aggregate for the season to 515 as Wanderers recovered from losing three early wickets to close on 93 for three off 19 overs after Maple declared their first innings at 154 for four off 32.1 overs at Dayrells Road.

Wanderers went into the match in eighth position on 50 points - five ahead of Maple.

Rock bottom Barbados Youth, who started the series on 31 points are exempt from demotion.
