Elite Division

Top 40: 1999 - Police retain title, F. Reifer hits most runs, Benn bags record 9 five-fors in 77 scalps

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 12 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

He continues his highlights of the leading performances in each season.

Pulsating Police rule again despite defaulting one match

Despite losing one match by default because of internal problems, Police underlined their brilliance by retaining the First division title with one round remaining in the 1999 Championship.

Hence, they became the most successful team across the decades of the 1980s and ‘90s with six titles - four of them in the ‘80s - 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1987.

Significantly as well, all of Police’s Cups were captured under the captaincy of batting stalwart Leslie Reifer.

But as fate would have it, Police have not won a top league title since 1999.

After a quiet start including a fourth round defeat by one wicket against St. Catherine at Bayfield when they made a bold second innings declaration (Scores: Police 260 all out and 48-4 declared. St. Catherine 137 all out and 172-9), Police still managed to take over the lead alone with 20 points by the end of Round 5.

They then stepped up by reeling off three consecutive wins against Empire (by nine wickets at Bank Hall), YMPC (by 10 wickets at Weymouth) and Schools South (by 14 runs at The Lodge School, Society ‘A’).

So on 44 points - 11 more than second-placed Spartan - at the end of the eighth series, with the other main contenders being Pickwick (31), Banks (31), St. Catherine (30) and Wanderers (28), there was still keen interest in the title race.

Then came one of the most memorable moments in the history of the Championship as Police defaulted to Maple at Trents without a ball bowled. Reason? Police withdrew their teams from all divisions, citing a sick-out, which created a shortage of officers at stations.

At the same time, Spartan had to settle for first innings points against Wanderers despite being in a favourable position to force a win as rain washed out play on the final day at Queen’s Park. (Scores: Wanderers 86 all out and 80-3; Spartan 208-6 declared).

Spartan’s best chance of closing the gap was in the penultimate round against Police at Weymouth, but they were led on first innings with rain impacting on the final day when there was no play. (Scores: Spartan 69 all out and 45-5; Police 85 all out).

Police duly celebrated, having reached 58 points - ten more than Spartan - and then ended the season with an eight-wicket victory over Pickwick, again on home turf.

Spartan, too, finished with a win - by 56 runs against Banks at Queen’s Park.

Generally, it was a disappointing season for batsmen despite 22 centuries being scored including three by the Wanderers all-rounder Chris Humphrey.

Only five batsmen scored over 500 runs.

Floyd Reifer, the undisputed batting “king” of the 1990s, amassed the most runs (609) including two centuries and two half-centuries, at an average of 46.84, in ten matches for Cable & Wireless BET.

It was the seventh time of the decade that Reifer had scored more than 500 runs.

Livingstone Puckerin, the Spartan captain, made exactly 600 (ave: 33.33).

The others in the 500-run club were Wayne Blackman of Spartan (566; ave: 31.44), Humphrey (562; ave: 31.22) and Carlton’s Shirley Clarke (504; ave: 28.00).

Pickwick opener Adrian Griffith topped the overall batting averages with an outstanding 151.00, having scored 453 runs including two centuries in only four matches early in the season.

Left-hander Griffith, then a West Indies Test player, made 103 and 55 not out against Banks at The Brewery in the opening round and then slammed an even, unbeaten double century off YMPC at Kensington Oval in Series 2.

Six bowlers grabbed over 50 wickets.

The list was headed by lanky Spartan left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, an 18-year-old, whose 77 scalps a 11.02 runs each included a record nine five-fors.

The previous record for the most five-fors (eight) in a season had been held by left-arm spinner spinner Winston Reid (twice - 1995 (for YMPC) and 1998 (for Banks)) and Police pacer Sylvester Louis (once in 1998).

Impressive Police seamer Alvin Campbell took 56 wickets (ave: 13.23).

The St. Catherine fast bowling pair of Brian Shepherd and Dayne Maynard also stood out. Shepherd snatched 56 (ave: 11.96) and Maynard 55 (ave: 14.72).

Sherlon Greaves, the Empire leg-spinning all-rounder took 53 (ave: 12.49) and pacer Kelso Odaine of Pickwick (51; ave: 15.60).

For the only season of the decade, Reid did not attain 50 wickets. In nine matches for Banks, he picked up 44 (ave: 12.40).

Spartan leg-spinner Dave Marshall topped the bowling averages with a miserly 5.93, having taken 32 wickets - all in the last six rounds.

Jason King of Carlton was the top wicket-keeper with 40 victims (36 catches and four stumpings), while Spartan’s Kerry Lucas stood out among the fielders with 23 catches.

Police team (with matches in brackets) - Leslie Reifer (captain, 11), Feliston Gilkes, William Callender, Alvin Campbell (12), Stanton Proverbs, Brian Corbin (11), Trevor Griffith (10), Dwayne Brathwaite, Sylvester Louis (9), Rudolph Griffith, Desmond Linton (7), Ahmed Proverbs, Kenrick Marshall (5), Ian Williams (3), Duane Davis, Leroy Willoughby, Emmerson Sealy (2), Raphael Cumberbatch, Windle Corbin (1).
