Elite Division

Road to The BCA Top 40: 1998 - Louis looms large in record-breaking title for plucky Police

Bridgetown, Barbados, July 19 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

============================================

Louis, Proverbs, Thompson star for Police, Spartan’s Lucas scores most runs

Lifted significantly with both ball and bat by Sylvester Louis, Police pranced to the 1998 Division 1 title in record style.

Then a 40-year-old Station Sergeant and now an Assistant Commissioner, the burly Louis had a dream season as he hauled in a new record of 87 wickets at just 8.12 runs each and scored 258 runs (ave: 86.00).

Fast bowler Louis thus erased left-arm spinner Winston Reid’s 84 wickets for YMPC in 1995.

Captained by batting stalwart Leslie Reifer, Police were unquestionably proud and plucky champions. Since the Championship was extended from 12 to 14 teams in 1989, Police’s 73 points and eight victories were the most ever achieved by a team.

Police were the only side with a maximum 24 points after the first three rounds before losing the lead to Spartan following the next series.

They regained it for the fifth and sixth series, lost it again to Spartan after Round 7, but never looked back once recapturing it yet again from the eighth series, snatching four wins in the last six rounds.

Just as dramatically as they were bowled out for the season’s lowest total - 21 in 9.3 overs against Pickwick at Kensington Oval in Round 5, and still won with their backs to the wall - they also beat Spartan by 15 runs against the odds in the penultimate series at Queen’s Park.

Set 156 for victory, Spartan seemed well on course at 131 for four before crashing to 140 all out.

Not only were the Spartan fans annoyed but also the Cable & Wireless BET camp after the Wildey team had temporarily moved to the top of the table on the same day with a 99-run win over YMPC at Beckles Road.

Louis, tall, strong and aggressive, bowled 322.5 overs including 82 maidens and boasted of eight five-fors and three ten-fors.

He was extremely menacing in the last four rounds of the season, snatching four consecutive five-wicket hauls and five all told as he picked up 38 wickets in seven innings at 6.18 runs each.

His best figures were eight for 47 off 17 overs for a match haul of 13 for 61 off 28 overs against BCL who were “arrested” by an innings and 77 runs at Blenheim ‘A’ in the 11th series. He also took eight for 50 in the only innings against Carlton in the rain-hit final round at Weymouth.

Louis’ aggregate of 258 came in 14 innings but he was dismissed only three times. His highest score was 72 not out against Pickwick, which helped Police to a telling four-wicket win.

What made the innings most memorable was his side’s desperate position. Set 160 for victory after wickets fell like ninepins on a rain-affected second day pitch, Police were tottering on 15 for six before Louis and Stanton Proverbs rallied them to 77 by the close.

The pair duly finished the job with Proverbs contributing an unbeaten 60.

Such was the fighting spirit that was the hallmark of Police’s success.

Proverbs, a noted volleyballer as well, then aged 30 and discarded as a Barbados first-class player after representing the team as recently as the previous season, ended with 628 runs - the second most overall - at an average of 39.25.

Apart from Proverbs and Louis, wicket-keeper/batsman Derwin Thompson and pacer Emmerson Sealy were the other players who shone for Police.

Thompson, considered unfortunate not to have ever played first-class cricket, scored 522 runs (ave: 37.28) and was also the leading ‘keeper with 35 victims, while Sealy grabbed 61 wickets at 14.91 runs each.

Medium-pacer Alvin Campbell, who spent several seasons in the obscurity of the Barbados Cricket League competition while representing North Stars, proved useful with 26 wickets in his first outing at this level.

Reifer had an usuallly quiet season with the bat. In 11 matches, he scored 270 runs in 13 innings with three not outs (ave: 27.00) including two half-centuries. It was the first time in 17 straight seasons he failed to pass 300 runs.

After managing just two wins in the first half of the season, Cable & Wireless BET kept the title race alive down to the final day with some compelling play.

So desperate were Brian Johnson’s team to pip Police at the post that they made a bold declaration on 40 for three and conceded first innings lead by 113 runs going into the final day of the season against Spartan at Queen’s Park.

But in that rain-hit match, Spartan decided they would not accept the gamble and settled for batting practice all day.

Yet, all credit must be given to BET for the aggressive way they played in the latter part of the season, which brought them four wins in the last six matches.

What made BET’s effort even more commendable was the absence of their two international players, wicket-keeper/batsman Courtney Browne and prolific middle order batsman Floyd Reifer, for the last five matches because of overseas commitments with West Indies teams.

Browne and Reifer were also unavailable for a couple other matches, either at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia or the Red Stripe Bowl Championship in Jamaica.

Browne rediscovered his batting form to such an extent that he was the first to reach 500 runs for the season by the eighth round despite missing Round 6 against Police because of a brief holiday in London. He finished with 553 runs (ave: 55.30).

The season’s leading run-getter was Kerry Lucas of Spartan. A 22-year-old former Barbados Under-19 team captain, he amassed 642 runs at an average of 40.12, but failed to hit a century.

Lucas’ highest of four half-centuries was 76 against St. Catherine.

Lucas, Stanton Proverbs, Derwin Thompson and Courtney Browne were joined in the 500-run club by four others - the Empire pair of Roland Holder (584; ave: 44.92) and Shawn Graham (578; ave: 57.80), Sean Armstrong of Banks (543; ave: 25.85) and St. Catherine’s Horace Walrond (524; ave: 37.42).

Walrond’s aggregate was the very same he achieved in the previous season.

Eleven bowlers grabbed more than 50 wickets.

Sylvester Louis and Emmerson Sealy apart, the others were Winston Reid (Banks, 72; ave: 11.23); Henderson Broomes (Carlton, 64; ave: 14.28); Terry Rollock (YMPC, 62; ave: 13.30); Sherlon Greaves (Empire, 61; ave: 11.55); Dave Marshall (Spartan, 58; ave: 11.82); Lonelle Hutson (C&W BET, 57, ave: 9.71); Matthew Nicholls (Maple, 57, ave: 8.26); Victor Walcott (Empire, 51; ave: 12.92) and Sulieman Benn (Schools North, 51; ave: 15.76).

Reid represented Banks for the first time after sensationally parting with YMPC. He carried his haul of wickets for the decade to 601 and 874 all told since his debut in 1981.

It was the ninth consecutive time Reid had taken more than 50 wickets in a season and the eighth in that period he had delivered over 300 overs in a season. In 1997, he sent down 297.2 overs.

Leg-spinner Marshall, affectionately known as "Yamma", had the best innings figures of nine for 41 in the first innings against Schools North (match figures of 13 for 86) at St. James Secondary in Series 10.

In a competitive battle for the fielder with the most catches, Jason “Jayasuriya” Clarke of Carlton took a record 25 with the Empire all-rounder Robin Parris on 24.

The previous record was 23 by St. Catherine’s Ryle Stuart in 1989.

Clarke was a big-hitting left-hand opener, who earned his nickname for the style of batting, which was reminiscent of the Sri Lanka international Sanath Jayasuriya.

Many of Clarke’s catches were taken in the slips. And he completed a relatively good season with the bat, scoring 496 runs (ave: 35.42) to top the Carlton aggregates and averages, as he earned an invitation to the Barbados trials for the first time.

There were 17 centuries - two more than the number for the previous two seasons. Graham and Browne each scored two.

Fast bowling all-rounder Henderson Bryan of Wanderers had the honour of lashing the highest individual score - an unbeaten 163 at No. 6 in a first innings total of 352 for six declared off Pickwick at Kensington Oval in the penultimate round.

It was a memorable match for captain Bryan - he led the side for three of four matches he played towards the end of the season, either because of professional contract or Barbados duties - as he then snatched five for 44 off 14 overs in Pickwick’s response of 191 all out before the match was drawn with Wanderers on 73 for one in the second innings.

Police team (with matches in brackets) - Leslie Reifer (captain, 11), Rudolph Clarke, Derwin Thompson, Sylvester Louis, Emmerson Sealy (13), Stanton Proverbs, Feliston Gilkes, Trevor Griffith, Alvin Campbell (12), Stephen Herbert (8), Ahmed Proverbs, Duane Davis (7), Desmond Linton (4), Trevor Greenidge, Ian Williams, Danwell Jordan (2).
