Barbados Pride proudly presents hampers to four families in COVID-19 crisis
Bridgetown, Barbados, May 23 - (www.bcacricket.org) - The champion Barbados Pride first-class cricket team showed its generosity in the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis by presenting hampers purchased from fines of players, to four families.
Spearheaded by team manager Wendell Coppin and captain Kraigg Brathwaite, the hampers were handed over to the families at the Office of the Welfare Department, Weymouth, in Bridgetown.
Coppin, who has been the manager for the past five seasons, lauded the initiative.
“It was a really nice gesture by members of the Barbados Pride team,” said Coppin, himself a former cricketer of note who represented the Barbados and West Indies Youth teams as a fast bowling all-rounder some 35 years ago.
“Obviously, the decision to use the fines at the beginning of the season to go to families in need was a wonderful gesture on the part of the players and in light of the pandemic what has struck home most is that there are many of us, who are less fortunate.
“Therefore the opportunity to help those, who are less fortunate than ourselves was one that was taken way back in November and it is nice to see that the players have gone through with this and handed over to families, making those families much happier.”
Brathwaite remarked: “Obviously at this time with Covid going around, we are very happy to be able to help families with hampers and we just hope that this would do a good thing for them.”
Acting Senior Welfare Officer Sharon-Rose Gittens was touched by the gesture.
“It has taken some steps to reach this particular point and knowing that you are Barbados Pride and you are cricketers and show good sportsmanship, at this present time, at a point when everything seems to be so chaotic, then really and truly I want to thank Barbados Pride,” Gittens said.
“It was really a measure of true sportsmanship to us and a true dedication of your value in recognizing that persons within the Welfare Department are qualified and valued by the Barbados Pride. Thank you.”
Barbados Pride comprehensively won the 2019-20 Cricket West Indies four-day title, making it the 23rd time the region’s most decorated nation had captured the prestigious Championship, which started way back in 1966 under the banner of the Shell Shield.
For established West Indies Test opening batsman Brathwaite, it was the second time he tasted silverware as the Barbados captain in the first-class Tournament. The other occasion was in 2014.
