Road to The BCA Top 40: Banks clinch 1986 title in thrilling finish, special feat for schoolboy R. Holder

Bridgetown, Barbados, May 9 - (www.bcacricket.org) - This year, 2020, marks the 40th in which Keith Holder has been compiling statistics on the premier Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Championship.

Formerly known as the First division since 1892, it was rebranded as the Elite division in 2012 - three years after the promotion and demotion system was introduced.

To mark his four decades of keeping track on the performances of all the teams and players, Holder will ultimately feature a BCA Top 40 in batting, bowling and fielding (most runs, most wickets etc).

Over the next couple of months, he will be highlighting the leading performances in each season.

=================================

Race for Championship goes down to wire, Roland Holder hits most runs

For the only time in the 1980s, a schoolboy scored over 500 runs in a season.

And in a very exciting race for the 1986 title at the “death”, Banks edged out Wanderers by one point after four teams went into the final round with a chance of silverware.

It meant that Wanderers, whose last two titles were in 1980 and 1982, finished runners-up for the second straight season.

Roland Holder, captain of Combined Schools and an 18-year-old Head Boy at Combermere, amassed the most runs (660) at an average of 36.66, but failed to hit a hundred.

Holder scored six half-centuries with his highest, 99, agonisingly against BCL at the Ellerslie ground, St. Stephen’s Hill, in the seventh series.

He had made his first-class debut the same year.

Adrian Grant of Pickwick also scored over 600 runs - 601 (ave: 40.06).

Two other batsmen were in the 500-run club: Spartan’s Roy Alleyne made 528 (ave: 27.78) and Ricardo Harrison of Carlton (519; ave: 30.52).

Harrison’s teammate, Dale Ellcock, a 19-year-old fast bowler, sporting a big jheri curl afro, was the top wicket-taker with 54 at 15.11 runs each.

And veteran Wanderers medium-pace all-rounder and captain Stephen Farmer was still bemusing batsmen in the twilight of his career.

Farmer, then aged 36, took 53 wickets at 10.69 runs each to top the bowling averages.

Heading the batting averages was Leslie Reifer, who had led Police to a hat-trick of titles starting in 1983, and was searching for 500 runs for the third time on the trot after boasting of the highest aggregate in the previous two seasons.

Reifer made 345 (ave: 49.28) before his advance came to an abrupt end with two matches remaining, having sustained a broken arm against St. Catherine at Weymouth.

There were 12 centuries with two each from left-handers Michael Inniss of Empire and Thelston Payne, the St. Catherine stalwart.

Ricky Skeete of BCL continued to show off behind the stumps, taking the most victims - 31 (23 catches and eight stumpings) for the third time in four seasons.

Three fielders tied for most catches (17) - the Pickwick pair of captain Clinton St. Hill and Grant and Wanderers’ Richard Armstrong.

Now, going into the last round, Pickwick were at the top on 39 points, followed by BCL 34, Banks 33 and Wanderers 32, as the teams in contention for the title.

As it turned out, pitches were generally rain-affected for the series.

Wanderers, fired by a 12-wicket match haul from Farmer (5-18 and 7-34) beat Pickwick by seven wickets at Dayrells Road. Scores: Pickwick 36 and 69. Wanderers 74 and 33-3.

BCL dramatically tied with YMPC at Blenheim. Scores: YMPC 61 and 61. BCL 34 and 88.

And Banks declared in both innings and “brewed” Maple by 36 runs at The Brewery. Scores: Banks 113-7 declared and 141-8 declared. Maple 49 and 169.

The Banks captain was Garcia Atkins, a portly left-hand batsman known for his attacking strokeplay and who bowled stiff right-arm medium-pace.

That season, Atkins, also known as “St. Paul”, played in all 11 matches, scoring 204 runs (ave: 11.33) with a highest of 36, but he topped his team’s bowling averages, picking up 15 wickets at 8.20 runs apiece from 53.3 overs.

Significantly against Maple, he grabbed six for 16 off 12.1 overs in the first innings.

Atkins’ team-mate, all-rounder Richard “Cargoo” Holder, vividly recalled the match.

“It was one of those times where if the pitch was rain-affected, a guy like Garcia would get wickets because he was a stiff medium-pacer with little movement. He always used to bowl relatively straight and was useful on rain-affected surfaces,” Holder told BCAcricket.org.

“Though limited as a batsman, he liked cricket very much. He always saw himself as a leader and wanted to captain Banks. At that time we had a good team.”

Richard Holder, himself, played a key role with the ball as a swing bowler in 1986, taking 47 wickets (ave: 13.68) - the third most. And he sent down the most overs all told (314) including 100 maidens.

The Banks team included three pairs of brothers - Richard and Junior Holder, Clyde and Keith Beckles and Arnold and Feliston Gilkes.

Clyde Beckles, a former Barbados all-rounder, died in 2001 at the age of 52.

And sadly as well, Atkins passed suddenly in November 2013, aged 60.

Apart from some of his former club-mates, his funeral at the St. David’s Anglican Church, Christ Church, was attended by Stephen Farmer.

The Banks team of 1986 (with matches in brackets) - Garcia Atkins (captain), Arnold Gilkes, Adrian Ashby, Barry Callender, Richard Holder, Clyde Beckles, Tyrone Roberts (11), Feliston Gilkes, Charles “Tailor” Griffith (10), Lewis Spooner (8), Keith Beckles (4), Leeson Brewster, Junior Holder, Edward Bascombe (3), George Brathwaite (2), John Brathwaite and Ronald Callender (1).
