Bullen hits unbeaten ton in Isolation Cavaliers’ 233-7 v North Stars , BCA Intermediate Final, Day 2

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 15 - (www.bcacricket.org) -  Guided by an unbeaten century from captain Jamaine Bullen, IDL Walkers Sand Quarry Isolation Cavaliers continued their resolute batting against North Stars on the second day of the 2019 BCA Intermediate division four-day Championship Final at SJPI today.

Cognizant that a no result will assure them of the title and promotion to the First division for the first time next season by way of the greater number of points in the Zonal Competition, Isolation Cavaliers took their overnight score from 97 for three off 46.3 overs to 233 for seven off 100 overs in the first innings at the close.

It, therefore, meant that 136 runs were added for the loss of four wickets in 53.3 overs.

The 24-year-old Bullen, who went to the crease at No. 4, was on 133 after starting the day on 47.

A former student of The Alleyne School, Bullen’s century came in 274 minutes off 217 balls, with six fours. His half-century took 179 minutes off 137 deliveries and contained three fours. He has been at the crease for 386 minutes, faced 308 balls and struck seven boundaries.

Bullen and Jamel Morris added 109 in 217 minutes off 55.5 overs for the fourth wicket before left-hander Morris, who started the day on 28, was bowled by pacer Dario Marshall for 39.

Morris faced 160 balls and counted two fours and one six.

Bullen then dominated a fifth wicket stand of 56 in 77 minutes with Jahbari Doughlin, who was leg before wicket by off-spinner Alvin Campbell for 12 off 39 balls.

Left-arm spinner Giovonte Depeiza accounted for Micah Thornhill, leg before wicket for seven.

And in what turned out to be the day’s last over, Shaquan Mayers was bowled for 12 by Ian Broome, trundling off-breaks.

The progress of the match, which continues on December 21 and 22, brought back memories of the 2015 Final when Bullen also stood out with the bat in a no result against Barbados Fire Service at Weymouth.

On that occasion, Bullen topscored with 88 not out in a total of 343 for six off 106 overs, but Barbados Fire Service also batted solidly to end on 333 for five off 124.1 overs, led by a century (103) from Kareem Currency, to take the title.

This is the fourth Final in the last eight seasons - the others apart from 2015 were in 2012 and 2013 - for Isolation Cavaliers, whose home ground is at the KMV Oval in Lakes, St. Andrew, while North Stars, a Crab Hill, St. Lucy side, had only one other appearance 17 years ago when they were champions.

Since the promotion and demotion system started in 2009, rural teams from the north of the island have been making an impact on local domestic cricket, and both Isolation Cavaliers and North Stars are anxious to join Lords, the Lowlands, St. Lucy team in the First division following Lords’ promotion in 2018.

Success for Isolation Cavaliers will earn them a second lower division title this year after they demolished JCB Boscobelle, a St. Peter side, by 119 runs in the Final of the Shield 40-over Championship at Crab Hill on August 11 with Bullen starring as an off-spinner, grabbing five for 18 to earn the Player-of-the-Match award.

It was the third time Isolation Cavaliers had won the Shield in five Finals in the past 11 seasons, underlining their growing reputation as a progressive club.

No other team has won as many Shield trophies or played in as many 40-over Finals since 2009.
