R. Boucher, R. Williams, K. Brathwaite, Joshua Drakes stand out in BCA Elite division averages

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 4 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Two players each from new champions Spartan and Wanderers boast of the top positions in the batting and bowling averages for the 2019 BCA Elite division three-day Championship.

Experienced Spartan opener Rashidi Boucher not only amassed the most runs (603) including two centuries, but was also the only batsman to reach the coveted 500-run mark. He played in the maximum nine matches and averaged 50.25.

Ryshon Williams, a 19-year-old left-arm spinner from fourth-placed Wanderers, grabbed the most wickets (40) at 16.07 runs each in only his third season. He, too, turned out in nine matches, sending down 180.3 overs.

Leading the batting averages, however, was Kraigg Brathwaite, the Wanderers, Barbados Pride and West Indies Test opener with 84.00 after scoring 252 runs including two centuries in three matches.

And leg-spinning all-rounder Joshua Drakes of Spartan topped the bowling averages (9.52) in taking 21 wickets from 58 overs.

It was a special season for the 29-year-old Boucher. Playing at this level for the 14th straight year after making his debut in 2006 for Barbados Youth, he co-incidentally also passed 6 000 runs in the same match - a Nelson (111th) of his career - he made a century (116 not out) and reached 500 runs - v Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP), Series 8 at Queen’s Park.

Boucher now has 6 052 runs including ten centuries and 32 half-centuries from 183 innings including 13 not outs, at an average of 35.60.

His highest score this season was 139 in the first innings against the now demoted Crane Resort St. Catherine in the seventh round at Queen’s Park, and his aggregate was the highest he has achieved in a season after passing 500 runs six times. (See his career statistics at bottom of page).

Williams, better known as a top order batsman before this season, had a best haul of nine for 80 in the first innings against Carlton, finishing with a match tally of 13 for 131, in Series 4 at Desmond Haynes Oval.

He is the youngest bowler in the last 35 years to take nine wickets in an innings with the accomplishment being the 26th in the period under review.

Significantly, since featuring a settled number of ten teams from 2012 - the same year the Championship was rebranded as Elite from Division 1 - after the promotion and demotion system was introduced in 2009, embracing 16 teams, this was the first season in which a bowler failed to achieve 50 wickets.

Close to Williams were two other left-arm spinners in Empire’s Camarie Boyce (38; ave: 12.36) in seven matches and the Carlton captain Matthew Jones (36; ave: 16.91), who played the full season.

Encouragingly, 16-year-old Barbados Youth off-spinner Tariq O’Neale, a student at The St. Michael School, took 31 wickets (ave: 15.64) and boasted of the best match figures (13 for 81) against BDFSP at Paragon in the final series.

O’Neale’s feat is the most in a season by a Barbados Youth bowler in the last eight seasons. The previous holder was left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop with 25 (ave: 16.52) in 2016. Bishop now represents seven-time champions Sagicor Life UWI.

In relation to UWI, this is the first time a bowler from that club has failed to pick up 20 wickets in a season. Furthermore, apart from being dethroned, UWI’s seventh position is their lowest in 11 seasons of promotion/demotion.

There were 19 centuries - three more than last year. In addition to Boucher and Brathwaite, three other batsmen managed two - Tevyn Walcott (BDFSP), Jonathan Drakes (Wanderers) and Kevin Stoute (Empire).

Jonathan Drakes is the older brother of Joshua Drakes.

Spinners were again very dominant. Of 17 bowlers who took at least 20 wickets, only three bowled fast or medium. They were:  Stefon King of Spartan (22; ave: 12.68), Empire veteran Tennyson Roach (21; ave: 14.23) and Rico Hurley of BDFSP (22; ave: 21.72).

King was the only player to feature in both the batting and bowling averages. In nine matches, he scored 226 runs (ave: 28.25). And to boot, he was also one of the leading fielders with nine catches.

Andre Roach of Empire and the gifted Spartan player Tauron Gibson, who also played a solitary match for Barbados Youth in the first round, were the wicket-keepers with the most victims (19 each).

There was a tight battle among the fielders as well with three jointly at the top on 11. Rashidi Boucher was again in the picture, along with Demetrius Richards (Barbados Youth) and Craig St.Hill (Wildey).
