Spartan spank sinking St. Catherine for fifth time in 11 seasons of BCA promotion/demotion

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 29 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Having now soared as sole leaders in the BCA Elite division three-day Championship with only two rounds of matches left in the 2019 season, Spartan’s spanking of sinking Crane Resort St. Catherine by nine wickets at Queen’s Park on Sunday marks the fifth time they have swept aside their beleaguered opponents in 11 seasons of the promotion and demotion system.

The other six matches have been drawn with St. Catherine taking first innings lead on four occasions.

Spartan’s wins have all been convincing. Apart from this season, they triumphed by seven wickets at Queen’s Park (2010); again by seven wickets at Bayfield (2013); by 99 runs at Bayfield (2015); and by nine wickets at Queen’s Park (2016).

Spartan’s acceleration in the last four rounds is stunning in that they have reeled off big wins, earning as many as 74 points to jump from sixth position on 23 points after Series 3 to 97 - ten more than joint pre-series front-runners Wildey.

In fact, Spartan are the only side with four wins as well as the only side to gain maximum points twice - on the field - against Wanderers who lost by an innings and 36 runs at Dayrells Road in Series 5 and St. Catherine, who are facing demotion for the first time.

Their other victims have been Gladiola by 81 runs inside two days at Rices in Series 4 and long-standing arch-rivals Empire by a whopping 253 runs at Queen’s Park in Series 6 when the Bank Hall team tumbled for only 18 in the second innings.

That win marked the first time in 29 years that Spartan had beaten Empire in the ‘derby’. The last occasion was by two wickets at Bank Hall in 1990.

Since then, Empire defeated Spartan on six occasions - by nine wickets at Queen’s Park in 2005; by ten wickets at Bank Hall in 2006; by 121 runs at Queen’s Park in 2007; by seven wickets at Bank Hall in 2013; by one wicket at Queen’s Park in 2014 when they captured the title in their 100th anniversary year and by 180 runs at Bank Hall last year.

After the just concluded Series 7, St. Catherine are one from the bottom of the table on 32 points - five more than Barbados Youth are exempt from demotion.

Their last two matches are against whipping boys Barbados Youth at Bayfield and Empire at Bank Hall.

Barbados Youth have been downright depressing, losing six straight matches after ironically drawing against Spartan in the opening round at the Harrison College ‘A’ ground, Crumpton Street.

Apart from St. Catherine, only one other team - Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) - realistically face relegation. BDFSP are on 50 points with their remaining matches against Spartan at Queen’s Park and Barbados Youth at Paragon. (See Full Points Table below, as well as summarised scores of Spartan-St. Catherine matches since the promotion/demotion system started in 2009).
