Wildey pair Parris, Pinder top Elite division averages, Empire's Alleyne, Boyce have most runs, wickets

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 19 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Wildey’s new player Shane Parris and experienced fellow team-mate Steve Pinder head the batting and bowling averages going into the mid-season of the 2019 BCA Elite division three-day Championship.

But the young, talented Empire pair of Kadeem Alleyne and Camarie Boyce boast of the most runs and wickets respectively after Series 4.

And with Championship leaders Empire, on 67 points, opposing second-placed Wildey, who are just two points adrift, at SJPI in the fifth series starting on Saturday, September 21, interest will be heightened as 11 players from the two teams among 37 all told feature in the leading batting and bowling averages.

The 26-year-old Parris, who joined Wildey (formerly known as Banks and Banks Wildey) this season after seven years with Maple who were demoted for the first time at the end of last year, has 258 runs from four innings including three not outs, hence giving him a wonderful average of 258.00 in three matches. He missed the third round match against BDFSP at home because he was out of the island on personal business.

An established No. 3 batsman, Parris’ highest score is an unbeaten 102 in the first innings against rock-bottom Crane Resort St. Catherine at Bayfield the second series.

It was his fourth century at this level and his first since 2014 when he enjoyed his best ever full season with back-to-back tons - 103 v BDFSP at Paragon and 135 v Barbados Youth at Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden (Series 6) in amassing 487 runs (ave: 40.58).

Parris was, however, denied a chance to become the first batsman to score a century this season when he reached 90 not out in a total of 139 for one off 29 overs by tea on the opening day against Sagicor Life UWI at SJPI before the title holders shockingly forfeited the match by refusing to take the field after the interval, claiming they were unhappy with the condition of the field.

Incidentally, Parris started his local club career with Banks in 2009 before representing Barbados Youth in the next two seasons. He was a Barbados Under-19 team player in 2010 and 2011.

Another Wildey cap, opening batsman Craig St. Hill, is also enjoying a very healthy average of 123.00 after scoring 246 runs from six innings including four not outs.

St. Hill moved to Wildey in 2018 after five years with ESA Field Pickwick, who were demoted following the 2017 season.

His highest score is 154 not out against St. Catherine. Like Parris, Parris also has four top division hundreds.

Alleyne, who celebrated his 20th birthday on September 4, has 289 runs (ave: 48.17). His highest score is 104 in the first innings against Barbados Youth at Cane Garden in Round 2. He agonisingy fell for 95 in the first innings against BDFSP at Bank Hall in Series 4.

Alleyne represented the national Under-19 team in 2017 and 2018.

Three other batsmen are in very close distance of Alleyne. They are: Jonathan Drakes (Wanderers) 286 (ave: 57.20), BDFSP captain Tevyn Walcott with 282 (ave: 40.28) and Nicholas Kirton (UWI) 280 (ave: 56.00).

Drakes, who represented first-time regional one-day champions Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) last season, is the only batsman with two centuries.

All-rounder Kirton also turned out for CCC last year and then had the luxury of making his first-class debut for Barbados Pride as well, while wicket-keeper/batsman Walcott is a Barbados Pride player.

Left-arm spinner Pinder, 32, has 16 wickets at a miserly 8.06 runs each in three matches. His best figures are seven for 23 against Barbados Youth at Cane Garden in Series 4.

Boyce, a 19-year-old left-arm spinner as well, boasts of 25 wickets at an average of 8.24. His best performance is also against whipping boys Barbados Youth - five for 27 in the first innings en route to a match haul of ten for 55 at Cane Garden in the third round.

He is a former Barbados Under-19 team player.

Boyce’s closest challenger is yet another 19-year-old left-arm spinner, Ryshon Williams of Wanderers. He has 22 wickets wickets (ave: 11.50) including the best innings (9-80) and match figures (13-131) against Carlton at Desmond Haynes Oval in the fourth round.

Eight centuries have been scored - half of them against St. Catherine.

There are 22 instances of bowlers taking five wickets in an innings and five of ten-wicket match hauls.

Andre Roach of Empire is the leading wicket-keeper with 12 victims (all catches), while the fielder with the most catches is Wildey’s Zachary McCaskie (eight).
