Focus on BCA 17th Special meeting as Garner challenges Riley for presidency

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 28 - (www.bcacricket.org) - The 17th Special Meeting of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) will be held on Thursday, August 29 at Kensington Oval on the 2nd Floor of the 3Ws Stand at 5:45 p.m.

The main interest surrounds the battle for the top post with former long-standing president Joel Garner challenging incumbent Conde Riley.

The 66-year-old Garner, an iconic former Barbados captain and West Indies fast bowler of the 1970s and 80s, was president between 2007 and 2017 before stepping aside to take up an appointment as manager of the West Indies team.

Garner first served on the Board of Management way back in 1988.

He has been proposed by David Trotman, a former Spartan batsman and seconded by Michael Thompson, a well-known match referee in BCA domestic competitions.

Riley, also aged 66, became president on July 27, 2017. He easily defeated two opponents, amassing 284 votes against former Board members Erskine King (84) and Deighton Smith (80) at the Hilton Hotel.

Riley, a retired investment banker, first served on the BCA Board in 1996.

His proposer is the world’s greatest ever all-round cricketer, The Right Excellent Garfield Sobers, with Cammie Smith, a former West Indies opening batsman and one-term BCA president as seconder.

Battles for the top post featuring Garner and Riley are nothing new. It will be the third time for such a showdown.

Garner triumphed 166 to 121 in August 2013 and again by 127 to 101 two years later.

Two ladies - former BCA Board member Anthea Ishmael and newcomer Amanda Reifer, wife of interim West Indies head coach and former Barbados and West Indies batsman, Floyd Reifer, are both seeking two positions.

They both want to unseat Gregory Nicholls as secretary and if unsuccessful, they are among a long list of 11 candidates vying for three places as Directors, currently held by Winston Stafford, Timothy Boyce and Roland Butcher.

The others in contention are Hartley Reid, Jeff Broomes, Anthony Depeiza and newcomers Pedro Greaves, Errol Barrow and Calvin Watson.

Successful candidates will serve for the period 2019-21.
