Garner goes after Riley for BCA presidency, Broomes battles for Board director

Bridgetown, Barbados, July 26 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Two veterans of Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) administrations dating back just over three decades - Joel “Big Bird” Garner and Jeff Broomes - are seeking positions at the eagerly awaited 17th Special Meeting on August 14.

Garner, 66, an iconic West Indies fast bowler and a former long-standing BCA president, who first served on the Board of Management way back in 1988, will be challenging incumbent Conde Riley for the top post, which Garner held for ten years before stepping aside two years ago to take up an appointment as manager of the West Indies team.

And the 65-year-old Broomes, a retired secondary school principal, who first sat on the BCA Board in 1990 and later became a First as well as Third vice-president, is among a whopping 11 candidates vying for three places as a Director after he last served in 2011.

Garner, a successful former Barbados captain, has been proposed by David Trotman, a former Spartan batsman and seconded by Michael Thompson, a well-known match referee in BCA domestic competitions.

Riley’s proposer is the world’s greatest ever all-round cricketer, The Right Excellent Garfield Sobers, with Cammie Smith, a former West Indies opening batsman and one-term BCA president as seconder.

Battles for the top post featuring Garner and Riley, a 66-year-old retired investment banker, are nothing new. It will be the third time for such a showdown.

Garner triumphed 166 to 121 in August 2013 and again by 127 to 101 two years later.

Broomes first served on the Board from 1990-95 and was elevated to First vice-president, 1996-97. His other stints were as Third vice-president from 1999-2004 and as a Director, 2007-2011.

A former Barbados team manager at both youth and senior levels, Broomes has been proposed by former Barbados leg-spinner and until recently long-standing selector, Sherlon Greaves, and seconded by Ricardo Clarke, who is a member of the Maxwell Club (not to be confused with former Wanderers cricketer and current coach at the Dayrells Road club, Ricky Clarke).

Two ladies - former BCA Board member Anthea Ishmael and the exuberant Amanda Reifer, wife of interim West Indies head coach and former Barbados and West Indies batsman, Floyd Reifer, are both seeking two positions.

Ishmael and Amanda Reifer want to unseat Gregory Nicholls as secretary and if not successful, they are among the long list of candidates vying for three places held by Timothy Boyce, Winston Stafford, OBE, and Roland Butcher.

The others in contention are Calvin Watson, Hartley Reid, Anthony Depeiza, Pedro Greaves and Errol Barrow.

The 17th Special meeting is slated for Kensington Oval on the second Floor of the 3Ws Stand, starting at 5:45 p.m. Successful candidates will serve for the period 2019-21.

Following is the full list of candidates, with proposers and seconders in brackets:
