Country boy Depeiza stars with bat and ball as Weekes CoE Under-17s grab Sir Garfield title
Bridgetown, Barbados, July 22 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Country boy Giovonté Depeiza starred with both bat and ball to spur the Sir Everton Weekes Centre of Excellence (CoE) Under-17s to their first title in the long-standing Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools’ Tournament at Kensington Oval.
Competing for the third time in the 33-year-old Tournament, CoE Under-17s beat Alleyne School by 16 runs.
Depeiza, a product of Frederick Smith Secondary (formerly St. James Secondary) and who hails from Crab Hill in the northern parish of St. Lucy, slammed an attacking 71 off 45 balls with two fours and six sixes in a total of 197 all out off 39.3 overs after the new champions lost the toss.
He then grabbed three wickets for 17 runs off eight overs with his left-arm spin as Alleyne were bowled out for 181, also off 39.3 overs.
It capped a memorable last two weeks for Depeiza who was also a member of the Barbados team, who retained the regional Under-17 title in Trinidad.
Depeiza, who bats right-handed, featured in a fourth wicket partnership of 50 in 6.5 overs with wicket-keeper/batsman Shaqkere Parris, who made 39 off 65 balls with three boundaries.
Romario Brathwaite helped to beef up the total towards the end of the innings with an unbeaten 22 off 15 balls, while the talented Kevin Wickham made 20 in a rather subdued knock, which lasted 60 balls.
Left-arm pacer Ramon Simmons, who picked up the first two wickets for 12 runs in an impressive four-over spell from the Joel Garner end, finished with four for 32 off eight overs, while left-arm spinner Venice Vaughn took three for 41 off 7.3 overs.
Alleyne were seemingly on course for victory after passing 100 with only two wickets down but the last eight wickets tumbled for 72 runs in 19 overs.
Hans Campbell hit the topscore of 63 off 89 balls including three fours and three sixes at No. 3.
Campbell featured in a second wicket stand of 91 in 13 overs with guest player Demetrius Richards, who made 46 off 44 balls containing five fours and two sixes.
Apart from Giovonte Depeiza’s three scalps, Wickham showed his all-round ability by snatching three for 30 off 7.3 overs as a leg-spinner, while Jabari Hunte took two for 32 off eight overs.
Parris also enjoyed himself behind the stumps with five victims including four catches.
