Barbados Under-19s lose by 4 wickets to UWI in practice match
Bridgetown, Barbados, July 16 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Barbados Under-19s lost by four wickets to a fairly strong Sagicor Life UWI side in a one-day practice match at Desmond Haynes Oval today.
Reduced to a 38-over, the national youth team, who are preparing for the Cricket West Indies Championship in St. Vincent this month, were bowled out for 193 in 37.3 overs.
That effort was due mainly to a seventh wicket partnership of 65 in 11.1 overs between captain Nyeem Young and fellow all-rounder Matthew Forde after they were struggling on 68 for six by the 14th over, and ultimately a last wicket stand of 58 off 11.2 overs between Forde and Shemar Persaud.
Forde topscored with 63 not out off 69 balls including four fours and four sixes, while Young, who represented West Indies at the last ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, scored 45 off 44 deliveries as he counted five fours and one six.
Persaud was run out for 17.
There were two other double-figure contributors - Rashawn Worrell (27) and opener Dasani Griffith (14).
Left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, an immediate past Barbados Under-19 team captain, took two for 26 off seven overs, while new ball bowlers Aaron Daley Jr and Gavin Marcus had identical figures of two for 42 off eight overs each.
Following an opening partnership of 99 in 17.1 overs between Abhijai Mansingh and Johann Jeremiah, UWI triumphed with 13 balls to spare.
Jeremiah made 49 off 66 balls with six fours, while Mansingh scored 47 off 49 deliveries containing five fours.
Left-arm spinner Rikeem Headley, son of the former Barbados Under-19 team batsman of the early 1980s, Robert “Fat Boy” Headley, grabbed four for 38 off eight overs.
Barbados Under-19s 193 all out (37.3 overs) (Matthew Forde 63 not out - 69 balls, 4 fours, 1 six; Nyeem Young 45 - 44 balls, 5 fours, 1 six; Rashawn Worrell 27, Shemar Persaud 17, Dasani Griffith 14; Joshua Bishop 2-26, Aaron Daley 2-42, Galvin Marcus 2-42).
