Lively Leacock grabs 7-8 as Barbados crush T&T by 7 wickets, CWI U-17, R4, Up 8, Report, SCORECARD

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, July 11 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Exhibiting aggressive fast-medium bowling, all-rounder Jaden Leacock grabbed seven wickets cheaply to set up a commanding seven-wicket win for Barbados over arch-rivals Trinidad & Tobago today as they remained firm favourites to repeat as champions of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Under-17 one-day Tournament with one round of matches remaining.

In two telling spells, vice-captain Leacock finished with the remarkable figures of seven for eight off 7.2 overs.

His devastating bowling, marked by nippy deliveries, sent Trinidad & Tobago tumbling to 78 all out off 28.2 overs in the key fourth round match at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

And after being 30 for three in the 12th over, Barbados were propelled to victory in 22.4 overs by captain Nimar Bolden, who emerged from poor form to score 33 not out and the in-form Kevin Wickham, with an unbeaten 32.

It was the third win for Barbados - their other match against the Leeward Islands ended in a no result - lifting them to 15.9 points - 2.9 points ahead of second-placed Jamaica - their opponents in the final round at Gilbert Park on Saturday.

Barbados are the only unbeaten side in the six-team Championship. Their other victories were against the Windward Islands by three wickets and Guyana by seven wickets. Rain allowed only 14 overs against the Leeward Islands, who are now third on 11.3 points, followed by Trinidad & Tobago on 9.3, Windward Islands 6.2 and beleaguered Guyana on one (See Full Points Table below).

As it stands, the outcome of the Barbados-Jamaica will determine the champions with Jamaica needing a victory to prevent Barbados from taking the title to Bridgetown again.

Leacock, a Combermere School student, was truly outstanding today. After rain delayed the start of play for over an hour, Barbados won the toss and duly put Trinidad & Tobago in.

And after ten overs, they were 30 for three with Leacock taking all three wickets for four runs in a five-over spell.

By the 18th over, the score was 51 for five - all the wickets to Leacock for six runs in a six-over burst before taking a rest.

Then two wickets by seamer Che Simmons, helped by another scalp from left-arm spinner Devon Stevenson, left Trinidad & Tobago on 66 for eight after 25.4 overs.

Fittingly, Leacock returned to snatch the last two wickets.

At lunch, Barbados were 33 for three off 14 overs with Bolden on 15 and Wickham, two.

With cool heads, Bolden and Wickham formalised the outcome. Bolden struck four boundaries in a 56-ball knock, while Wickham lashed two fours and two sixes off 41 deliveries.

In the other matches today, Jamaica beat Guyana by five runs at Gilbert Park and the Leeward Islands defeated the Windward Islands by 13 runs at Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
