WICB 4 Day Tournament

Barbados beat Leewards by an innings and 18 runs, Regional 1st-class, Day 2, Update 6, RESULT

North Sound, Antigua, March 15 - (www.bcacricket.org) - A bizarre second innings declaration by Leeward Islands Hurricanes gave Barbados Pride a win by an innings and 18 runs on the second day of their rescheduled fourth round match in the regional first-class Championship at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground today.

With a first innings deficit of 101, Leeward Islands were 83 for two off 19.5 overs when the declaration was made 40 minutes after lunch.

Apparently, the Leeward Islands team management miscalculated the points in an effort to finish second behind Guyana Jaguars, who captured the title for a fifth straight season.

Prior to this rescheduled round, Guyana had 154.2 points, the Leeward Islands, with a mathematical, though very remote chance of capturing the Championship, were on 131.2, Barbados 116.8, Windward Islands Volcanoes 92 (completed), Trinidad & Tobago Red Force 90.6 and Jamaica Scorpions 88.6.

As it turned out, Barbados gained 12 points for the win, three for bowling in the first innings, two for pace bowling in the first innings and 0.4 for pace bowling in the second innings to end on 134.2, which gave them second position, edging out the Leeward Islands by a mere 0.2 points.

The Leeward Islands got two points for bowling and 0.8 for pace bowling to finish on 134 in third position.

Apart from the Headley/Weekes Trophy, the champions earn US$15,000 and the runners-up US$8,000.

In the Leeward Islands second innings, the not out batsmen were Montcin Hodge on 40 and Akeem Saunders, five.

Keacy Carty was caught at second slip by Jonathan Carter off pacer Marquino Mindley for four (12-1; 2 overs).

And Devon Thomas was caught at first slip by Kraigg Brathwaite off fast bowler Keon Harding for 21 (74-2; 17.3 overs).

Bowling: Cummins 4-0-25-0, Mindley 5-0-15-1, Harding 6.5-1-23-1, Holder 4-0-15-0.

Starting the day on 154 for four off 46 overs, Barbados scored 191 for eight declared off 54.5 overs in reply to a first innings total of 90 all out off 38 overs - after the first 45 minutes’ play.

Captain Shamarh Brooks topscored with 82 after resuming on 79.

Today, Shane Dowrich, defending a lifting delivery, was caught by Jahmar Hamilton off fast bowler Alzarri Joseph without adding to his overnight 28 (154-5; 46.1 overs).
