Beleaguered Barbados Youth total 300 in an innings for first time in five years in BCA Elite division

Bridgetown, Barbados, November 9 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Often the whipping boys of the BCA Elite division three-day Championship and increasingly so in recent seasons, Barbados Youth managed their first total of over 300 in an innings for the first time in five years on the opening day of Series 6.

Against lowly-placed CounterPoint Wanderers at the Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden, rock-bottom Barbados Youth amassed the only score in excess of 300 - 350 all out off 61.2 overs after they were sent in on November 3.

All-rounder Matthew Forde hit the topscore of 89 in 114 minutes off 68 balls including 15 fours and fellow Combermere and national Under-19 team player, opener Shian Brathwaite, made 82 in 127 minutes off 77 balls with nine fours and five sixes.

It was the first time since Series 4 in 2013 (June 15, 22, 23) that Barbados Youth, who are exempt from demotion, had reached 300 in an innings. On that occasion and also at Cane Garden, they made 342 all out in 91.1 overs in the second innings against St. Catherine, who were held to a draw after gaining a first innings lead of 84.

Leading contributors to that effort were Aaron Jones (88), Zachary McCaskie (65) and Jofra Archer (53 not out) - co-incidentally all products of Foundation School and who now all represent Wildey. (See summarized scores below).

Furthermore, last Saturday’s score was the first time since 2010 (Series 12) when they made 303 for two off 70 overs in reply to a first innings total of 297 all out (67.2 overs) by Maple at Cane Garden, that Barbados Youth managed to earn the maximum four batting points.

This is the 10th season of the promotion/demotion system and in 98 matches prior to the start of the current series, Barbados Youth have been beaten 48 times, while winning only four including two in 2009.

The four victories are: 2009 - by an innings and 60 runs v LIME (now Gladiola) at Cane Garden (Series 10); by ten wickets v BDFSP at Paragon (Series 12); 2012 - by seven wickets inside two days v Police at Weymouth (Series 9); 2013 - by an innings and 122 runs v LIME at Crumpton Street (Series 1).

Of the defeats, 41 have come since 2012 when the Championship was rebranded as Elite from the more than century-old First division, and the teams were reduced to a settled number of ten.

They have finished last for the past four seasons and on the current path, having lost five matches, it again seems inevitable unless they make a big turnaround.

Their defeats this season have been by ten wickets inside two days before tea v Gladiola at Rices; by an innings and 111 runs, again inside two days before tea v Sagicor Life UWI at Harrison College, Crumpton Street ‘A’; by 23 runs v St. Catherine at Bayfield; by six wickets v Spartan at Queen’s Park; and by four wickets inside two days v BDFSP at Cane Garden.

In the other years of promotion/demotion, the positions of Barbados Youth show: 2009 - (6th of 16); 2010 - (12th of 14); 2011 - (12th of 12); 2012 - (9th of 10); 2013 - (9th of 10).

Significantly, the 2009 team which lost only one match, produced ten first-class players - Jason Holder, Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Raymon Reifer, Shane Dowrich, Jomel Warrican, Kyle Mayers, Anthony Alleyne, Mario Rampersaud and Kemar Brathwaite - with six of them - Holder, Kraigg Brathwaite, Chase, Dowrich, Warrican and Reifer - going on to play Test cricket.

Holder, the current West Indies Test and One-Day International captain, was the skipper with Dexter Toppin as the coach.

There are now 20 instances of Barbados Youth scoring over 300 runs in an innings since the promotion/demotion system with eight being achieved in 2009.

But despite the gloom which they have faced in recent years, Barbados Youth still boast of the highest total in the period under review.

Not surprisingly, it came in 2009 when they amassed 583 for nine off 148.1 overs in reply to a first innings total of 176 all out (72.5 overs) by Wanderers at Cane Garden in the first round.

They occupied the crease for two days and a bit, having ended the first day on five without loss off two overs, and then closed Day 2 on 206 for two off 70 overs.

Raymon Reifer topscored with 180 – his maiden top division century. The left-hander batted for 317 minutes, faced 220 balls and struck 22 fours, two sixes and one five.

Chase made 98, Kraigg Brathwaite (84), Dowrich (51) and Holder (41).

Prior to that, ESA Field Pickwick were the last team to amass more than 500 in an innings - 509 for nine (innings closed) in 89.3 overs in their first innings off Police at the 3Ws Oval in a rescheduled ninth round match, which was drawn in 2005.

There were two century-makers in the Pickwick first innings – Anthony Hurley (174) and Joseph Harris (114 retired hurt).

Police were bowled out for 204 and Pickwick made 304 for four in the second innings with Kirk Edwards scoring 101 not out.

Pickwick were the champions that year - the last time they clinched the title.
