WICB Regional 50-Over Tournament

Half-centuries for Stoute, Carter and Leniko Boucher as Barbados 50-over trials climax

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 12 - (www.bcacricket.org) - There were three half-centuries in the fifth and final Barbados Pride one-day trial match at Desmond Haynes Oval with two of the leading batsmen among them.

Veteran all-rounder Kevin Stoute hit 70 for Sulieman Benn’s X1 in a total of 225 for six off 45 overs after they won the toss.

The experienced Jonathan Carter then responded with 53 and the in-form Leniko Boucher, on the eve of his 21st birthday and heavily tipped to make his List A debut as a wicket-keeper/batsman in the regional Super50 Championship next month, scored an unbeaten 50 as Carter’s X1 triumphed by three wickets with five balls remaining.

The 32-year-old Stoute’s knock took 88 balls and included seven fours and one six after he went to the crease at No 3. He added 86 in 21.1 overs for the third wicket with Zachary McCaskie, who scored 40 off 70 deliveries containing three boundaries.

Stoute, a former Barbados captain but who did not lead any of the teams in the trials, topped the batting averages with 81.50, having scored 163 runs in three innings including one not out.

The unrelated Holders with the same first name initials, fast bowler Chemar and off-spinner Chaim, co-incidentally finished with the identical figures of two for 41 - and both off seven overs.

Apart from the standout batting of Carter and Leniko Boucher, Carter’s X1 successful chase was helped by three half-century partnerships and an enterprising 45 from gifted left-arm fast bowler (first-class all-rounder in the making), Dominic Drakes.

Aaron Jones (28) and left-hander Carter put on 55 in 13.2 overs for the third wicket, Carter and Boucher added 51 off 11.1 overs for the fifth and Boucher and Drakes featured in a brisk seventh wicket stand of 74 in 9.4 overs.

Carter received 76 balls and counted three fours and one six, Boucher faced 69 balls and struck four boundaries and Drakes, who played for Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League which ends on Sunday, lashed two fours and three sixes off only 35 balls.

Leniko Boucher boasted of the most runs in the trials (200) at an average of 50. Having scored 530 runs (ave: 53.00) including one hundred and four half-centuries for new champions Sagicor Life UWI in the just concluded BCA Super Cup (he and team-mate Anthony Alleyne were the only players who batted a maximum 11 innings), he has undoubtedly pencilled in his name in the Barbados Pride squad which is expected to be announced in a few days.

The main wicket-takers for Benn’s X1 were the two most successful bowlers in the trials.

Jamaican fast bowler Marquino Mindley, who was picked by the Barbados selectors in the May 23 draft for the 2018-19 Cricket West Indies Professional Cricket League season, took two for 27 off nine overs to end with seven wickets in three matches.

Mindley’s scalps were opener Shayne Moseley (21), who amassed a new Super Cup record for the most runs in a season - 630 (ave: 88.89) for CounterPoint Wanderers in 2018, and Carter, who won three matches and lost one at the helm in the trials after publicly stating in radio interviews recently that he wants to captain Barbados Pride in the forthcoming season.

Off-spinner Kemar Jabarry Smith took two for 40 off nine overs to finish as the top wicket-taker with eight at 16.87 apiece. His economy rate (ER) was 3.80.

Having emerged as the leading wicket-taker as well in the Super Cup Championship with 22 (ave: 11.68 and a miserly ER of 2.76 - the third best among bowlers who took at least ten wickets) for finalists Bayview Hospital YMPC, Smith, a brother of former Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith, should also be among the selectors’ shortlist.

Benn, a former West Indies left-arm spinner, was captain for three matches in the trials, losing on two occasions. A veteran of 122 List A matches - the last in which he sustained a hand injury off his own bowling against Trinidad & Tobago at Kensington Oval in February this year - he must come in for a deep discussion among the the selectors.

Today, the batsmen tested Benn and he was the most expensive bowler in the match, conceding 65 runs off eight overs while picking up the wicket of Dominic Drakes.

The regional Super50 Tournament will be played in Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago from October 1 to 28 with Barbados hosting Zone ‘B’ as well as the semi-finals and Final.
