BCA Super Cup

Leniko Boucher joins rare 500-run club as dominant UWI beat YMPC by 4 wickets in Super Cup Final

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 9 - (www.bcacricket.org) - There were at least three significant achievements for Sagicor Life UWI as a team and individually in capturing the 2018 BCA Super Cup Championship.

A four-wicket win over Bayview Hospital YMPC at Kensington Oval today gave Jonathan Carter’s side a record-equalling fourth title with ICBL Empire since the turn of the century, their attacking opener and Player-of-the-Match Leniko Boucher, in scoring 56 four days before his 21st birthday, became only the third ever batsman and the second in 2018 to score 500 runs in a one-day season, and UWI sent YMPC tumbling to the lowest total by a team batting first in a Final - 106 all out in 39.5 overs.

Spartan boast of the record for the most limited overs Cup titles (eight) since 1975 but only one has come since 2000 (in 2002) as Empire and UWI have been the dominant teams.

In fact, Empire have featured in six Finals in the last 19 seasons - they were champions in 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2008, and this was the fifth for UWI with their other titles in 2007, 2012 and 2015.

Unquestionably, UWI are the most decorated team in all three versions of the game since they were elevated to the top division in 2006.

Apart from the latest success, their silverware achievements show six in the Elite division (rebranded from First division in 2012) - 2009, 2010 (shared with Spartan), 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017 and a record five in the Sagicor General Twenty20 - 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 - which is only in its 11th season.

And mind you, UWI are on course for capturing the three major titles in one season for a third time as they are in the semi-finals of the T20, and lead the Elite division, which is now in its fourth series.

So now to the field of play today.

After losing the toss and with early moisture for a 9 o’ clock start giving the YMPC batsmen a testing time against a mixture of spin and pace, inadequate techniques were shown up.

Psychologically, losing the most experienced player in the match, Dwayne Smith, off only the second ball without a run scored was a blow that seemingly left YMPC wondering whether a couple of their players wouldn’t require treatment at the hospital of their sponsors.

Pushing uncertainly at left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge, Smith edged a low catch to slip in Anthony Alleyne.

For some strange reason, Shakib “Dark Man” Kellman, who is good enough to have scored the first century in last year’s Super Cup Tournament but who struggled this season, never gave any signs of wanting to get behind the pace of Jermaine Levy.

Then after calling for an off stump guard, he pushed at one outside the off stump off the same bowler and provided wicket-keeper Boucher with a regulation catch to end with 82 runs at an average of 16.40 in seven matches.

So it was nought for two after 11 balls, thus calling for a recovery.

Kevin Gittens and Kemal Smith - one of three Smiths in the YMPC side (the other two are brothers, Dwayne and Kemar Jabarry) - managed to add 41 in 16.3 overs for the third wicket, which turned out to be the best stand of the innings.

Kemal Smith had difficulty getting the ball off the ‘square’ and was eventually caught by Carter off Hodge for seven, having faced as  many as 57 balls.

Left-hander Shaquon Carrington, a talented basketballer, was soon leg before wicket by veteran left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds for three before Gittens and oldstager Ryan Wiggins sought to lead another recovery.

Hesitation over a single on the part of Gittens led to his run out for 29 off 77 balls including two fours after a stand of 29 in 7.5 overs.

Wiggins, who became the first ever player to amass 500 runs in a Super Cup season (he made 528 at an average of 47.26 in 2016 when YMPC won the title; opener Shayne Moseley of last year’s champions CounterPoint Wanderers was the second with 620 (ave: 68.88) this year), played positively in scoring 24 off 42 balls with three fours and one six before he was removed by pacer Chemar Holder.

It led to a dramatic collapse as the last five wickets tumbled for ten runs in 30 balls.

Hodge took two for 14, Hinds, two for 17, medium-pacer Carter, two for 18 and Holder, who was troubled by wides and no-balls, two for 20.

The YMPC total was beefed up by a top score of 31 from extras.

Ironically, the previous lowest total by a team batting first in a Final was made by UWI - 119 in 40.5 overs - against Maple in 2012, but UWI hit back to win by six runs.

The lowest total in a Final is 81 in 29.4 overs by Carlton against Maple in a 116-run defeat, way back in 1977.

In UWI’s run chase, after a wayward first over in which he sent down ten wides, left-arm pacer bowled Aaron Daley for nought in his second over and medium-pacer Dwayne Smith followed with two wickets in the space of three balls in the next over.

Dwayne Smith bowled left-hander Alleyne for five and had Hodge caught at the wicket by Arthur without scoring.

And when Austin pierced Carter’s defence to bowl him for one in the next over, leaving the score 32 for four after 4.1 overs, YMPC were bubbling.

By lunch, UWI were 44 for four off seven overs with Boucher on 16 and left-hander Nicholas Kirton, five.

YMPC, however, became deflated as Boucher and Kirton counter-attacked in a partnership of 70 in exactly 17 overs before Boucher touched Smith to Arthur.

Boucher’s knock came off 61 balls and included seven fours. He ended with 530 runs including one hundred and four half-centuries, at an average of 53.00.

Added to knocks of 47 and 52 in the last two Barbados Pride trial matches at Foursquare Oval and Kensington Oval, Boucher’s dream of making his List A debut as a wicket-keeper/batsman in next month’s regional Super50 Championship of which Barbados will host Zone ‘B’, as well as the semi-finals and Final, now seems sealed and signed.

Ryan Hinds was leg before wicket first ball from Dwayne Smith before Kirton ended the match ten balls later at 2:12 p.m by lifting off-spinner Kemar Smith, the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 22 scalps, over long-off for six in an unbeaten 30 off 62 balls with two fours and one six.

The UWI success came with a whopping 27 overs to spare.

Dwayne Smith grabbed four for 23 and Austin, two for 33 including 15 wides. Both sent down five overs in a desperate bid for YMPC to pull off a win but the Beckles Road team would have known deep inside that their total was inadequate.
