Mindley grabs five, 50s for Leniko Boucher, McCaskie in fourth Barbados one-day trial

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 6 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Jamaican draft selectee Marquino Mindley grabbed five wickets following an impressive new ball burst and there were half-centuries for Leniko Boucher and Zachary McCaskie in the fourth Barbados Pride trial match at Kensington Oval today as players stepped up their bids for places in the squad for next month’s Cricket West Indies (CWI) Super50 Championship.

The 23-year-old Mindley, picked by the Pride selectors in the May 23 draft for the 2018-19 CWI Professional Cricket League (PCL) season, rocked the early batting of Mario Rampersaud’s X1 with four wickets.

Despite sending six wides in an innings in which all 18 extras were wides, Mindley ended with five for 27 off ten overs as he spurred Jonathan Carter’s X1 to a 50-run win.

Mindley removed national Under-19 team batsman Shian Brathwaite (five), his opening partner Jason Greene (15), Barbados Under-17 and Under-19 player Antonio Morris (six) and Aaron Jones (18) to leave Rampersaud’s X1 tottering on 46 for four by the 13th over as they chased 229 to win.

And with rookie pacer Shakeem Clarke accounting for Jameel Stuart for a ‘duck’, there was a sorry looking scorecard at 56 for five in the 16th over.

Veteran all-rounder Kevin Stoute and the uncapped McCaskie then led a recovery by adding 45 in 9.2 overs before Stoute fell to Clarke for 26 off 34 balls including four boundaries.

Rampersaud’s side were eventually bowled out for 178 in 46.2 overs.

McCaskie scored 52 off 73 balls including five fours and one six before he was eighth out in the 38th over with the score 148, leg before wicket by the impressive Mindley.

Left-hander Rampersaud, among an interesting list of contenders for a place in the Pride team as wicket-keeper/batsman, scored 27 not out off 47 balls containing three fours.

Clarke took two for 23 off seven overs.

Earlier, Leniko Boucher significantly stepped up his bid to gain the wicket-keeper/batsman spot ahead of the likes of incumbent Tevyn Walcott and Rampersaud by scoring 52 off 69 balls including three fours and two sixes in Carter’s X1 228 all out in 45.3 overs after they won the toss.

Boucher’s knock followed a second straight top score, having made 47 in a another winning effort at Foursquare Oval on Tuesday.

And with a solid showing in the BCA Super Cup Championship with an aggregate of 474 including one century and three half-centuries at an average of 52.67 for Sagicor Life UWI going into Sunday’s Final against Bayview Hospital YMPC at Kensington Oval, the diminutive Boucher’s chances of making his List A debut as the Pride’s wicket-keeper/batsman are rosy.

Boucher usually bats at the top the order but he went to the crease at No. 6 and featured in the most productive partnership of the innings - 60 in 11.4 overs for the fifth wicket with the experienced batting all-rounder Carter, who is the UWI one-day skipper.

Carter has publicly expressed a desire to captain Barbados Pride for the first time ever in the October 1 to 28 Super50 Championship, which will be played in Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago with the former also hosting the semi-finals and Final.

He made 48 off 66 balls containing six boundaries.

Craig St. Hill, an opener by nature but batting as low as No. 7 despite scoring unbeaten 57 at No. 4 at Foursquare Oval on Tuesday, played enterprisingly for 36 off 32 balls with five fours and one six.

Boucher and St. Hill added 50 in 9.5 overs for the sixth wicket.

Medium-pacer Stoute took three for 34 off nine overs, off-spinner Kemar Jabbary Smith sustained his consistent form from the Super Cup in which he is the top wicket-taker with 22 scalps for YMPC, by taking three for 45 off 7.3 overs, while exciting young fast bowler Jair McCallister, despite troubled by wides and no-balls, picked up two for 41 off eight overs in a total of 228 all out off 45.3 overs.
