WICB Under-19 One-Day championship

Barbados title hopes wiped out after losing by 3 wickets to Jamaica in CWI Under-19 One-Day

Kingstown, St. Vincent, August 27 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Barbados’ hopes of capturing the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Under-19 one-day Championship and emulating their Under-15 and Under-17 compatriots were wiped out after a three-wicket defeat against Jamaica in the sixth and penultimate round at Sion Hill today.

It was the second straight loss for Joshua Bishop’s side after victories in their first three matches, leaving them in fourth position on 16.6 points in the seven-team Tournament.

Despite losing to three-day champions Trinidad & Tobago by four wickets in the key clash at Arnos Vale, title holders Guyana are still at the top of the table with 22.3 points with Trinidad & Tobago breathing down their necks on 22 points.

The Windward Islands are third on 16.9 points after defeating a very weak Canada team by 79 runs at Park Hill. Canada lost all six of their matches and ended on 0.6 points (See full Points Table below).

In the last round of matches on Wednesday, Windward Islands oppose Guyana at Arnos Vale, Leeward Islands clash with Barbados at Park Hill and Trinidad & Tobago meet Jamaica at Sion Hill.

It was yet another disappointing batting display by Barbados after wining the toss. They were dismissed for 77 in 34.3 overs, having been 36 for eight by the 22nd over.

Matthew Forde and Bishop both scored 16.

The best partnership was 23 in seven overs for the last wicket between Bishop and Shemar Persaud, who scored five not out - one of four batsman with the same score.

Raewin Senior, the Jamaica captain and left-arm spinner, who undermined the Barbados batting in the three-day Championship with seven for 58 in the first innings, was again the main destroyer, grabbing four for 28 off ten overs.

New ball bowler Sanjay Williams picked up two for 15 off six overs.

The Barbados bowlers tried desperately to hit back, reducing Jamaica to 68 for seven after 20 overs.

But Senior again proved to be a bugbear, scoring 19 not out off 40 balls with two fours as Jamaica triumphed in 23.4 overs.

Opener Kirk McKenzie was the topscorer with a brisk 28 off 25 balls as he lashed three sixes and one four before he was second out with the score 40 in the seventh over.

Consistent wicket-taker, left-arm spinner Camarie Boyce, was again in the spotlight, snatching four for 25 off 8.4 overs.
