Six Barbadians in West Indies Under-15 squad to tour UK, Clarke elated to be head coach

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 6 - (www.bcacricket.org) – Six members of the champion Barbados Under-15 team are in a similar age group West Indies squad for a two-week tour of the United Kingdom.

The six are Nimar Bolden, Johann Layne, Jaden Leacock, Tariq O’Neale, Che Simmons and Rashad Worrell.

Although the names of the 14-member squad had been bandied around here nearly three months ago and even announced on a top local radio station as a lead news story, the official announcement was not made before today just before 9:30 a.m. - roughly eight hours before leaving here for London.

In fact, Cricket West Indies (CWI) did not even name a captain or vice-captain but well-placed sources later said that gifted batsman Bolden is the skipper with Sanjay Walker, the sole Jamaican in the team, as his deputy.

Also in the squad is another player with Barbadian roots, Carlon Bowen-Tuckett, the son of former Nevis and Leeward Islands all-rounder Carl Tuckett, who played a solitary One-Day International for West Indies and is now a first-class umpire. Carlon's mother, Sonia, was born and educated in Barbados where she worked for many years before migrating to Nevis.

It is the fourth straight year a West Indies Under-15 squad will be touring England.

CWI said it was an ongoing exchange between CWI and the England Barmy Army’s Colts. This year, the squad has attracted support from Virgin Atlantic.

The West Indians will play six 50-over matches including the Colts. They were scheduled to leave the Grantley Adams International Airport this evening after assembling here yesterday, and return home on August 20.

The team will play a Twenty20 warm-up match against the London Schools Cricket Association on Friday, August 10, before starting the official schedule on Sunday, August 12.

The squad was picked following the regional Under-15 Tournament in Jamaica in March-April with Barbados, led by Bolden, retaining the title which they captured at home in 2017.

Bolden was in brilliant form in the just concluded BCA Under-15 Championship, reeling off five centuries for Nicholls Baking Combermere, who were dethroned as champions by Christ Church Foundation after failing to reach the Final when they were victims of Milo Lodge in the semi-finals.

Head Coach Richard Clarke said he was elated to be given the job, having also served in a similar capacity with the Barbados Under-15 team.

“It is a dream came true. I have always wanted to be around the coaching at West Indies level and to be given such a position I am overwhelmed but very much appreciative as well,” Clarke told BCAcricket.org.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting it, but without a doubt look forward to giving my best which has been exhibited throughout my coaching career.

“Having said that, I owe a lot to my loving mum who has been and continues to be my main source of inspiration through her calls and many prayers sent every single day.

“To our President and Board Members, and Director of Cricket, I want to thank you for the confidence you have placed in me with this tenure.

“Special mention has to be given as well to my many friends and supporters for their encouraging words,” Clarke added.

“I would also like to thank the Coaches at our Barbados Cricket Association - Dexter Toppin, Emmerson Trotman and Vasbert Drakes - for embracing me when I first made my appearance, and was selected as coach of the National U14 Team to the UK.in 2013. I can’t forget Mr. Hartley Reid, Mr. Rollins Howard and Mrs. Roxanne Forte who were very instrumental in my acceptance within the BCA’s Coaching Staff.

“I am making special mention of Henderson Springer because of his unmatched knowledge in the area of coaching. He called every week to fill me in on the way forward as coach, and to encourage me not taking the progress I have made for granted.

“As I said earlier it is a dream came true, and rest assured the 14 talented young cricketers on tour will be well coached and managed by the following individuals: Mr. Steven Liburd, my Assistant from the Leeward Islands; Dr. Oba Gulston Manager/Physiotherapist; Mr. Dario Barthley CWI Associate.

“Thank you all for your support and God Bless.”
